Title: How to tie your shoe/boot laces...
Post by: ChuckMcB on May 22, 2011
Just tripped over this video about the strong and weak way * to tie a normal pair of shoe laces:

Gave me a flash back to a 'how to tie you boot laces' video that changed the way I've been tying them the last couple of years (I use the last technique from the video)

http://www.livefortheoutdoors.com/Videos/Search-Results/Walking/Boot-Lacing/

* Noticed a comment from someone saying

"Last year, one of my professors showed this to the class. He said the reason that we tie it in the weak form is that pretty much every other generation does. The reason he gave is that when a parent teaches shoe tying to a child, the child learns in a mirrored way. Thus one generation it will be tied the strong form and the next generation will tie the weak form, etc. "

...interesting...

Cool - the first vid was new to me, although I've always been a double-knot lacer which both holds the knot and orients it nice. Saying that, I will be trying this out... better is better  8)

I actually noticed this myself a number of years. I thought it was just me.

This makes perfect sense; I guess it depends on how you were taught as a child.

Nice find :)  I've had a few annoying pairs of laces that just won't stay put, even with a double knot, but that's probably due to me using the "weak form" :)  Actually, I've had some laces that weren't even long enough to double knot.

[rant]That really gets my goat... why do shoe manufacturers have to be so stingy with lace?!  Would it hurt to give me just an extra 1" of lace?![/rant]

The lacing technique video on LFTO is also really useful.  I only recently learnt that I tie my boots far too loose, allowing my feet to move about inside my boots which amongst other things has a tendency to cause friction and therefore blisters.  Only considered the different ways of tying boots when I watched Kat being fitted for a new pair in Cotswolds and the guy in the shop had an interesting way of lacing them up!
