Title: What Your Nalgene Says About You
Post by: RedLeader on April 05, 2011
What started as lab equipment and quickly became standard outdoor gear, Nalgenes are now the de-facto reusable bottle for everyone shamed by years of drinking from disposable plastic containers. But Nalgenes don’t just symbolize your feigned commitment to the environment, they reveal critical information about your personality.

Class. Just had a check of my Nalgene status....

Grey 600ml scratched inside and out by rice - no lid as the sides separated from the top... a constant fear and distrust I hold against all Nalgenes now.

White opague (the old-non BPA stuff it seams)... 400ml, has a faded price sticker that never came off. My name is on the bottom in red Sharpie and it smells of vanilla which means the last time I used it was in may 09 on the WHW and I stored whey powder in it.

Green 1000ml. Bought in Namche in Nepal so I could buy boiled water. Couldn't fit it in my bag so left for the staff in Mustang hotel. We had an uneasy relationship anyway; what with my distrust of the lids...

Sigg is slightly where it's at now. 660ml. Says some balls like 'the only way is green'* but is starting to scratch nicely. Only got washed after I stored wine in it... a bit of boiling water every month or so sterilizes it. Not convinced by the screw-top though - very secure but not inviting of regular hydration. Accessories are expensive.
750ml sports cap bottle gets a lot of use too.

* I liked the white bottle, and although try to be environmentally aware, such statements are slightly cringe-inducing  ;D

I like it... but I don't own a Nalgene ;)

My bottle of choice now is the 800ml SIS bottle (http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm/product/sis-bottle-800ml/fuseaction/products.detail/code/95110046).  Cheaper and lighter than either a Nalgene or a Sigg, fits better in the hand, easy to drink from and wash, and has little measurements up the side when you want to go all electrolyte.  They do look a bit like they belong to the type of people who shave their legs though :D

I want a Nalgene now...

Without having read to the whole article can you guys advise me what size and colour I should get that says "Don't mess with me I'm hard as nails" :D

Love the gaffer tape idea too, but I might just replace that with DPM Camo tape  :P

2 small Nalgenes covered in DPM - if it's warm enough not to need the second sleeping bag, it's warm enough to add the second bottle to your pack to carry some water. The regular one would never have water in it  ;)
Despite being filled from puddles and out in all weather, they would get washed well after each use like the other gear.

am I close?
