Hello everyone, currently training for the belfast marathon in May and as its only 7 weeks away im interested in researching a new goal to be set for the year. Was possibly thinking of doing the mourne wall anyone be interested in joining me?
-
I'm in.
-
Me too, might even have a go at the marathon as well ;D
-
Would you be looking to do it in one day or split it over two , i would prob join for a while as I doubt my fitness could see me doing the whole lot >:(
-
oops, i forgot it was 22 miles long, maybe just join you for for the first half and keep a few pounds in my pocket for the taxi back when my legs get sore ;)
-
Hi Dare2b. There's the Mourne Wall as mentioned, also the Mourne Way marathon (& ultra) in June, the Seven Sevens around August, the Mourne Mountain Marathon 2-day event in September... and the unofficial Mourne 500s (google will help) challenge is open to all with a GPS logger.
There are cycling events also, like Lap the Lough at the end of the summer.
There's a company 26extreme putting on other runs and adventure races too. Plenty to tire you out :D

Might I suggest starting at silent valley and going anti clockwise (towards binnian).

I remember you saying never again. I think there was swearing too :)

all I hve to say on the Mourne wall is that it's a one time deal. NEVER to be repeated.......... ;)
I was just looking for those quotes ;D
-
but pain is temporary.

I'd love to give it a go depending on dates as I work every other wkend , if it's in a few months I'm sure I could start training now ;D
Also need to practise drinking buckfast so I won't wimp out on the celebrating toast

Brilliant really pleased with the feedback, so glad iv found this site. I wasnt aware of the mourne marathon could possibly be of interest, what kind of training would you need for such an event? just as much fell running as possible i guess? As for the mourne wall im hoping possibly the end of may i think il be fit enough after the marathon and should olny take a few hikes to get my pace again. As for how many days to do it in, start point etc you guys are the experts i was hoping someone would take charge :)
-
i'd be good for the end of may. you wanna do it over 1 or 2 day?

Just some familiarity with trail running to be comfortable on uneven ground and wake up those small control muscles.
If you can do the marathon you'll be fit enough (I reckon anyone who can do a 10K can do a marathon - it's all hydration, nutrition and psychology after that). My training will be nothing longer than 10K/6miles, no more than 10miles running per week split between short runs on tarmac or trail and sprint/hill sessions. Leg and back strength will be worked a lot also. I do cycle a fair bit too.
Hiking is good for the ankles and leg /back strength... and the soul 8)

Think id like too push to do it in one day :) I think it would easier as i hate carrying alot of gear. Id hope to do it with just a small day sack filled with food and a camel pack for water.
-
I'd be up for one day. It would be tight. We start early and finish late.
-
I'd like the one-day too..... Maybe we can start finish, near a car park and get our gear and go back up for a campfire.....
Also, we'd maybe need to plan, on finding some water after the half way point, so we didn't have to carry so much water, as dehydration is probably the main thing....
-
but then if we're not carrying ALL the camping gear, we can probably carry as much water as possible... but i still like the thought of only carrying half....
-
Is someone gonna start pinning dates into these event so we can plan?
-
I think May was hinted at so can we agree on that an then get a date?
-
Hey, I'm pretty new but a wee challenge like this would be perfect for getting to know everyone! I'd be well on for this.

Coolio, good luck!
Thanks I'm bricking it if I'm honest but if I don't try I will never know , suspect has been a true gent sending me his route etc even though he has the small task of the TGO challenge in front of him ;D
-
You'll be grand, hopefully you'll get the weather too....
I use www.metcheck.com for weather, its really good, also has cool feature about what the weather will be like at specific altitudes of mountains. Sort of a site you can use to learn about weather which is another thing I want to do this year.
-
Well,
Did you all do it?
Anyone alive to recount the experience?
