Title: General musings
Post by: whoRya on February 21, 2011
Musings.  Definition:  a period of relection or thought  (Oxforddictionaries.com)

I thought I'd just create a space for people to share their thoughts.  You know, the kind of thing that comes into your head when you are in bed.  This shouldn't be a space for blank staring at the screen thinking of something to say but rather those things that just come into your head, sometimes at the most unexepected of times and you feel you would like to share them with others.  Hold that thought, and bung them on here when you get a chance.  The aim being that they may be thought-provoking for others.

Perhaps we can update things regularly and we can particularly encourage the thoughts of our lurkers, of which there are many.

My first contribution:

Last night I had a rather unsettled night and I thought I'd listen to music for a while.  The recent challenge by 666pack to share our first ten tracks on our 'shuffle playlist' had got me thinking recently.  I'm still a bit of an 'albums man'.  Even in this download age I tend to download the whole album if I'm half interested, since there can be enormous rewards gained from giving something several listens.  There are some tracks however that aren't great, if we are honest.

The Shuffle Test.  Here is my challenge to you.  If you are chilling-out, listening to your music, hit shuffle, it's great.  Sometimes though a track comes on and you just think "ach I'll fast forward this one".  This my friends has failed the shuffle test.  Delete it.  I mean give it a go, you may discover something new in it.  But if you are halfway through and you can't wait until the next track, bin it.  It isn't a cassette tape; you don't have to put up with this anymore!

I can't bear to do that. What would happen if I woke up one morning with a burning desire to listen to that track.

I do the reverse - I keep a playlist with all my favorite tracks. It's about 180 songs and I mostly operate it the way you suggest - I listen to it on shuffle and when I notice I'm forwarding a track occasionally I bin that bad boy. Similarly every time I hear a new song I like I avail myself of a copy and add it. The downside is I never really listen to albums any more.

Next time we have a big Donard Wood camp we'll organise an NI-Wild playlist. Everyone gets to choose their 5 or 10 favorite songs and we'll gather them into a single playlist. (Or just play Metallica, Rage Against the Machine and Pink Floyd all night as usual, I'm good either way ;))

When I'n in the house I just keep it on shuffle anyway. But I still like to put all new albums on my MP3 player and give them a good listenin to in work ;)

So I can pick my 10 favourite Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Neil Young songs then?
