Hey guys,
What is your ideal lunch in the hills.
Mine would be a couple of Rolls (brown) with chicken, salad and very light mayo, Banana, Tea & a bag of peanut M&M's.
While walking have a bag of jelly babies.

as long as you eat enough for the walk your doing.
you can soon run out of energy going up mountains.mate.
normally i would have something reL HEALTHY.
full of energy for the walk ahead.

Ideally, I'd like a fish supper :D
Sausage roll, pastie, pie type thing always nice. Frankfurter & cheese. Corned beef & brown sauce tortilla. Crisps. Nuts. Chocolate. Apple cut with a knife. Saying that, if it's a leisurely day in the hills without a big pack, water can suffice until dinner - although there's all the more reason to stop and have a feast and enjoy the view when the schedule isn't pressing and the company is good.
If I'm moving fast its all about electrolytes, carbs and some protein so some sort of tablet / space food / Clif bar type combo. If its a race I just remove the 'stopping to eat it' factor - walking for 5mins is an extra 0.5km over the stoppers!

Most of my walks are short enough that i don't need to bring a lunch, but when i do its usually a last minute dive into the garage for a pack of sandwiches and a couple of bananas, and if i haven't had beakfast i'll grab a few warm sausage rolls. On the odd occassion that i do plan a head i bring a flask of hot water and a cup-a-soup, chicken flavour, with croutons, the croutons are very important :)

ah yes, forgot about dessert :D

On a day walk I normally leave the stove at home and just bring sandwiches. Unless I have a new stove I want to play with ;)
I used to try and be semi-healthy with ham sandwiches in wholemeal bread etc. but I found that when I was tired and hungry they just didn't exactly set my taste buds on fire! So I ditched the meats and am happily munching away on peanut butter & jelly or Nutella sandwiches now. Tasty, good burst of sugar, lifts the spirits :)
The good old Scotch Egg is hard to beat as well... never tasted one as good as the one Jonno gave me on the summit of Donard after climbing Binnian, Lamagan, Cove, Beg and Donard in pouring rain!

Irrespective of what's for lunch it's the absolute pleasure of having something to eat and drink whilst enjoying the stunning views and peace and quiet that I really look forward to. Even on a short walk.
Isn't it funny/unfair that usually the things that you crave for aren't always the healthy option?! But so what they always taste sooooo good, especially if the rain's running out of the lace holes of your boots and you perhaps forgot some bit of kit?
I enjoy chicken in a wholemeal roll with sweet chilli sauce, fruit cake, a bannana and nuts & raison mix and a bag of jelly babies for on the move.
Do these over trousers make my R's look big?!

I'm always a bit unprepared when it comes to lunchtime food so it usually ends up being a quick stop at the garage on the way to buy a sandwich. Depending on the shop though it'll either be one of those rubbishy pre-made things or if its a good shop i'll get it made there for me. Can't go wrong with chicken, ham, lettuce and cheese with mayo in a freshly made baguette :D I'm really not fussy when it comes to mountain food though, I'm happy enough to eat anything because by the time I get a chance to stop and eat I'm so hungry that I don't have time to taste the food. For snacks I'm currently living off Kex bars, which I got addicted to in Sweden. You can get them in Ikea though so I'm pretty chuffed with that.
-
Home made sandwiches all the way. I'm really starting to get cross buying sandwiches in a garage that have a bit of filling at the front and naff all in the rest of the sandwich, these things don't meet the Trade Decriptions Act!
Oh, and pork pies rock!
Tell you what, that Twentyclicks is a pure machine, I tend to eat too much in the hills. I think because I'm climbing a hill I deserve a Mars (-a-bar - to give it it's proper name :) ) every half hour.

I was thinking about taking pies but that coulf get messy in your pack.
-
Pies need to go in last... keep in the packaging and just nestle in/on top of the lunchbreak insulation so doesn't slip down the side. Side pockets can look like the perfect place but I always end up swinging them into styles, or smashing with my elbow when taking the pack off!
WhoRya - I do get called a machine sometimes, but also super-hans, so go figure. Procrastination machine most of the time :D

bring pies but put them in a big lunchbox.
that way it does not matter if they get messy.
then will be messier where they are going mate. :D
