Title: Empty gas canister
Post by: Scribble on January 06, 2011
Hi I have two empty Coleman gas canisters and I'm not sure what to do with them , they are drained off gas but I'm sure I can't just throw them into bin or neighbours bin  :-\ I phoned my recycling depot and they said bring them back to the shop I got them from . Is he right ??

Cheers Abdy

What size are they? Are they the blue ones for camping cookers?

If they are I'd buy one off you.

Alan.

When I bought my stove from Tiso the guy told me that I could bring my canisters back to the store for recycling.  I don't want to sound like a spoil sport, but in my opinion it's the responsible option :)  If they still made episodes of Captain Planet he would be lecturing on the correct disposal of gas canisters :D

On a related note, I'm waiting on getting one of these: http://shop.jetboil.com/index.php/crunchit.html

There is a little video of it in action at the above link.  They aren't on sale in the UK yet, but I checked with the distributor and they are hoping to have them "early 2011".

silly question but have you checked the canisiter for any disposal instructions? ok, i know it'll say do not throw on fire  ;D i'd go out to the garage and check mine but it's freezing out there  :'(

Well my Go System canister, which is made and filled in England, says "Discard in a safe place".  So that really narrows it down.  It also says "Do not puncture/pierce or incinerate, even after use".  Of course the Jetboil CrunchIt pierces the canister and seems to be perfectly safe.  My Coleman canister says pretty much the same thing as the Go System one.

Guess the gas canister manufacturers are more worried about covering themselves rather than the millions of gas canisters that end up in landfill...

Sorted now I have two options , phoned head of maintenance in my work and he said he will make safe and crush for me or my second option which i have a feeling will be more fun is going out to my mates farm and use canisters for target practice , once shot punctured I can recycle . He did say next time leave a bit of gas in them as it's more fun when shot  :o
Cheers again for replys and I think Suspectmonkey has a fair point we should all get rid of them safely and not discard in bin

I usually just throw mine in the bin. Although since I have an OCD aversion to taking part used cannisters camping I have a cupboard full of 2/3 empty cans that I don't want to throw away!

You're in a mood :)
Don't tell me, you don your hemp slippers and sideburns, dig out the bicycle and ride to the nearest recycling centre? Don't think so, I'm guessing everytime someone thinks they see a shooting star over Bangor it's you just disposing of another one  ::)

You could empty the cupboard and coming shooting he has rifles and shotguns even a crossbow  ;D
