Just an idea, but we all like taking photos, maybe we should have a monthly competition, with the prize being...... the kudos just probably.

I like that idea. Would definately get you thinking a bit more before pushing the Shutter Release button.
Any thoughts on rules, if any... e.g. Digital Enhancement, Software used etc. I'd be happy with a free-for-all but maybe something like image size etc should be restricted. I went along to a local camera club before Christmas and they ran a monthly competition. I have their rules somewhere and should be able to dig them out for ideas.
-
Yeah, I'm game. We can just pick a random monthly topic.
-
not a good month for nudes though, too cold ;D
-
good idea to make the topic random...... i wonder how\who could pick that topic !
-
Maybe the previous months winner should pick the next months topic.
-
good idea - and as its my suggestion - i get to pick the first months topic !
-
I'm not the most imaginative - so suggestions are welcome!

At the risk of being done for plagiarism how about the following:
THE CATEGORIES
At the Water’s Edge
Lie of the Land
World View
On the Streets
Wild Britain
Wild Planet
Small World
On the Wing
Sunset to Sunrise
Nature on the Brink
Passion for Travel
That'll get you up to November

Let me know when the category for the month is "a bit dull and misty in the hills today, with not much to see". I have lots of choice for that one.
-
I'd like to float the idea in tandem of a "photo afternoon" where we pick a subject and all head out together. That way we can have some time out but since we are all photographing the same thing we can all compare results after and learn from what everyone else knows.

Heh... That's very funny :D I'd say that would be the busiest month for entries!!!

We'll Mr D, what's it to be for the first month? My camera's gathering dust here!!! ;)
-
The first months category shall be........... On the Streets
submissions to be posted before the end of the month !
I think the photo should have to be new (not from your back catalogue) - No cheating !
The rules are still open to discussion.
Hopefully anyone who wants to take part will leave a message so we know who's in and stuff !
-
Think the first months should be "summit camp" seeing as you will all be in the hills next wkend together :) I'm sure there would be a few good story telling shots and a few crackin grumpy faces in morning when lens is shoved in bivvy/tent ;D
-
Good idea scribble...... who put me in charge !
-
It's technically a good idea except no-one will want to lug their bulky DSLRs all the way up to a summit ::)

Well, do we want to do summit or street ?
Summit is handy, but i thought, it would be good to try to get away from the outdoors, for a change....

Stick to the original plan... "On the Street" I like it..! Gets you thinking and will be interesting to see everybodies interpretation.
I think the summit camp would just produce 50 photos, all very similar, and if it doesn't go so well on your first take you can't really go back out and try again later in the week.
Also... It's gonna be kinda dark up there, for most, upon arrival and if it's raining in the morning then this months photo comp could be sort of ruined.
I want to get up in the morning, shake off a hangover, and relax over a nice breakfast before conquering Meelbeg.
Just my opinion... but I'll go with the group!
-
Street gets my vote as I can enter then ;D
-
Quite a speech Dowser !
I agree, Street Style bitches !

I agree but is this not a outdoor website?
-
Yes, but variety is the spice of life, they say.

Just thought it's a bit unfair for those not going on next weekends Summit Camp... The compititions for everybody on the forum and I can just see those not on the summit camp trying to bluff one in their back gardens... It would be like NASA saying they landed on the moon then staging it all in a warehouse ::)
I agree but is this not a outdoor website?
Most streets I know are outside... I do have a scalextric in the roofspace ;)
-
........On the Street.......with an outdoor twist in the picture??............am thinkin full winter gear, crampons n ice axe...goggles the heap, outside Bow Street Mall midday on Saturday........here..... and whos joking......

:o YEEHAW!!! The Photo Comp has just got very interesting :o
We have very kindly been donated a Prize for our first months subject "On the Street". Closing Date for Entries: 12 noon on 31st January 2011.
Scribble has very kindly donated a bottle of Bushmills Black Bush, from the world's oldest licensed distillery, as a prize for this months photo challenge ;D
Prize giving will take place around a campfire in the hills, early February.
So get that artistic grey matter fired up and lets see what visual treats you can come up with.
P.S. There wont be a bottle of Black bush every month, so make the most of it ;)
-
Good timing as I just happened to have got a new camera today ;D
but i don't like whisky :'(
so if i win everyone wins (a share ;) )

Go Scribble!!

Most generous Scribble ! The pressure is mounting......
Now, how are we going to judge the winner?

Redleader and I are working on that. We are hopefully trying to line up somebody who knows a thing or two about photography to Judge for us.
We promise it wont be either Redleader or Myself cause we're gonna be entering the competition too :)

How about we just setup a vote on the thread? So we have a closing date for entries, and all entries are posted to a thread with a poll. Everyone can vote for their favourite, and voting will close at a set date. The person with the most votes get the prize. I know that's how they do it on a photography forum I use occasionally and it reduces the chances of the judge being bribed :D

Sounds good. To be honest I could probably be easily bribed :-[
I feel sorry for the person that gets little or no votes though..! MUST TRY HARDER ;D
-
I think..... having a poll on the thread ... is more open to abuse ......... If the judge was beyond reproach - i think that would be better ..... but then - taking things overboard - you could also have a poll - which is the forums favourite ...... why do i say these things !

As Chase Jarvis would say, "The best camera is the one that's with you. Every day." (http://www.chasejarvis.com/#a=0&at=0&mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&s=0&p=5)

Well here's my entry for the photograph a month competition, there I even included the year..
(hmm..well it seemed funny in my sleep deprived mind this morning when I took it....ignore me :-\)
-
Just a reminder... Closing date for this months entries is the 31st January.
Hope your all snapping away. I'm looking forward to seeing your interpretations.
I'll be honest, the subject matter "On the Street" has been a bit of a challange. I've had a couple of ideas but I have found them difficult to capture.
Your picture doesn't necessarily have to be of a "Street" of course... You have the luxury of an Artistic License (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artistic_licence) at your disposal.
Happy Snapping ;)
-
aye, not long till closing date, the pressure !
-
I have my photo taken.
are we going to post here or start another link for the photos olny so it tidys up abit?

Please could all entries for the Monthly Photo Competition be emailed to the following address: photocomp@ni-wild.co.uk
We are going to create a new section dedicated to displaying the photos and another section for friendly banter about the photos.
Closing Date is strictly 3pm on the last day of each month. The first entry you email in is the one that will be used. Once submitted it cannot be changed so make sure you are happy with your entry before emailing it!!!
Good Luck
