Hi Guys
I am going to be taking myself up Eagle Mountain & Shanlieve.
Wasgoingto go this Sunday 2nd Jan. Meet at Leitrim Lodge Picnic area.
Does anyone want to join me?
I would rather walk with someone than by myself. I can pick anyone up aswell as I have the car.
-
Sorry, would but working.
If anyone is doing anything tomorrow though (to clear the hangovers), I'd be up for tagging along :)
-
Lenny count me in for the Sunday walk, I haven't done them before, and i'm getting sick of Donard ;D
and make sure you bring some decent music ;)
-
I'm off today and tomorrow but back in sunday, so i'll have to give this a miss, Its a nice part of the mournes. Could be a bit boggy so don't forget gaiters!! Oh and watch out for farmer brown and his dangerous bull!
-
Bah, busy Sunday. Shame as Eagle is one I've yet to do.

I'd be up for this but I have to be at my parents house for lunch. Was planning a night hike to test out the new headtorch if anyone is still about by late afternoon/evening
-
you should have come up Donard last night then ;D actually i turned my torch off for most of the nighthike, i thought 13 torches on full beam was ample, just switched it on when out in front or when beside a deep drop to the river :o
Tomorrows meeting time is 10am at Leitrim Lodge, i'll be in Newcastle about 9.30am if anyone needs a lift from there.
-
Yep 10am tomorrow.
-
As with most meticulously planned trips things went a bit haywire :o Lenny slept in ::) and missed Darren :'( , I was early (for a change :D ) and we ended up not bothering with Eagle and Shanlieve, looks very steep up along the Batts wall so after Pierce's Castle we popped over to Tournamrock and then down to the Yellow River and walked back through the forest, about 4 hrs in total, something easy to start the year, isn't that right Lenny ;) wasn't too boggy, but a bit of a frost helped stop us sinking in places, will get some pics up later..
-
we didnt go over Tornamrock we went over Tievedockaragh.
Great to meet you Liam, next time I will take a Hour headstart lol :P.

just been looking at my maps of the area and we had problems finding the part of the Mourne Way we wanted to walk on, but my map had it marked as the Ulster Way, the 2nd map i checked has it marked as the Mourne Way and its a slightly different route near Leitrim Lodge, is the Mourne Way supposed to be part of the Ulster Way? has it changed its route in recent years?

Yes, the Mourne Way is a section of the Ulster Way. You can view the most up to date map of the route on Walk NI - http://www.walkni.com/ulsterway/sections/mourne-way/
I wouldnt be surprised if the route has changed over the last couple of years. The Ulster Way was "relaunched" in 2009 but it doesn't appear to be the same as it was before. I've certainly noticed there is a large section of off-road trail between Helens Tower near Newtownards and Helens Bay in Bangor that's missing, despite the old "Ulster Way" signage still being on the route.
I'm wondering if disputes with land owners and access has resulted in the amendments? There certainly seems to be an awful lot of road walking on the "new" Ulster Way...
