(According to this thread (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1554.15)) There seems to be the interest for some folks to come on a try caving trip in Fermanagh.
I'm free the weekend 29th - 30th Jan and am prepared to take up to 8 folks underground...
My suggestion is to go Saturday, try a few 'beginner' caves then if folks are interested we could stay over in our caving hut if it's not being used by anyone else...
I can prob gather enough oversuits and helmets, folks would need to wear their own underclothes and Wellies/boots and gloves (more info later)...
Bring your own food/drink/sleeping bag etc...
Share cars, prob best to meet in a central place in Enniskillen then we can convoy the rest of the way...
£10 donation per person to the cave rescue team...
If you're interested, stick yer name down here...
First Come, First Served...

darren.
as im able to get a lift from portadown.
-
Darren...
If you could get out the Carn/Seagoe Road Roundabout, I could swing off the Motorway and pick you up if no-one else is available...
-
I would be well up for this, put my name down dude, and i reckon davy (kendog) would be up for it also
-
Count me in I can bring Darren i'm coming from Portadown.

I'd be well up for this done some before down there with the scouts years ago. Hopefully its not one of my weekends that im working in scotland so will know better after the new year i'll keep in touch
Regards,
Dave

Ok...
So far I make it the following people....
Darren
Neil B
MG1
KenDog
Anyone else...?
Those that have expressed an interest, post (or PM me if you are shy, roughly what size (height & waist) you are so I can get oversuits to fit)
The plan so far, weather dependent is to enter the Marble Arch System via the Pool Chamber and follow the tourist trail to Journeys End, then a waist deep wade into the best bits of the cave which you don't get to see on the tour...
That will prob take 4-5 hours allowing for photo stops etc, and depending on how people feel we could maybe squeeze in another cave on Saturday as well...
Are people interested in staying over...?
If so, we can do a nice sporty wet cave on the Sunday before home...
I've attached a map of the MAC system...
If you've been on the tour, you start it at the M32 point on the boat, heading south to the boulder collapse at Grand Gallery, then turning back North you travel back North to Skreen Hill...
Journeys end is where the 'flintstone' characters are beside the pool, that's where we leave the trail and get into the interesting stuff...
The current 4 people is good as I can take you on my own, any more and I may have to look at getting someone on the team to help me out, so if you are thinking of going, let me know sooner rather than later...

I am planning to stay over too!! Bring in the caves!
-
looking forward to it sham.
your not afraid of going into underground caves then. :D
-
put me down on the reserve list please, could probably only do the saturday though
-
Hi Drongo,
Can I put another overnighter on the reserve list?
Her name is Mags..will pm you the details of height extra..
-
I managed to convince a two friends to help out on this weekend...
This means that I'll also be able to squeeze Mags and Liam in as well...
Totally full now, the hut we stay in will be full to (probably over) capacity...
One thing that I'll be short of is wetsuits, if you have your own, or can borrow one, it may be a good idea if you do, especially you plan to get wet on the Sunday...
More details next week...

hope u had a rel goof bday lenny.
there will be more chances for you lenny mate.
-
Sounds like a really top trip, any chance of some photos or is it not feasible when caving?
-
A waterproof/shockproof camera such as the Olympus 'Tough' series is great for caving..
Normal cameras are ok too, but expect a bit of mud and water and it will need an airtight/watertight container... Dry bags are not normally cave proof...

Some more info...
Where to Meet
McDonalds in Enniskillen @ 10:00 on 29th (Still in time for a Double Sausage & Egg McMuffin & Coffee) I drive a blue freelander 3dr, reg PEZ and I'll prob be inside with an Orange Caving helmet on the table.
McDonalds is on the right, just past the Landrover Dealerships as you enter the town.
It's a 1.5hr journey from Lisburn if you know the roads and stick to the speed limits.
From there, we'll travel together to Aghnahoo (Another 15 mins or so), our base for the weekend where we can dump gear and get changed into caving stuff.
Logistics, Safety & Cave Preservation dictate that we then split into 2 smaller groups of which I will be leading one and my friends Conor and Sean 'The Miner' will be leading the other.
I will provide helmets and lights and depending on what our club are doing they will either be funky new LED ones, or older pitlamp types ones. I will also be giving you a nylon boiler suit type thing to keep the worst of the water/mud off you. The rest of the gear you will have supply yourself but more about that later.
The place we are staying in is basic to say the least...
Living room with an assortment of chairs, some choice decorations and a fire
Kitchen is usually quite minging, although we have never poisoned anyone yet and there is almost always a kettle on the gas.
Upstairs there is wooden platform that people sleep on and under, snorers get kicked out into the cold.
No toilet/shower, but there is a fresh cold water pipe on the corner of the ruined cow shed.
Gear you will need to bring
Sleeping Bag
Sleeping Mat
Warm Clothes to wear as normal (non caving)
Your own personal wash stuff (normally I don't bother, I've been led to believe it's good for your skin)
Your own food & drink for dinner on Saturday & Breakfast on Sunday
Something to cook your food on/in
Loads of Hi-Energy Snacks, caving is very energetic, maybe more so than a hill day and especially if you are not used to it.
A drink container you don't mind taking under ground that will get bashed/muddy (throwaway plastic waterbottles are good)
Something to carry your drinks and snacks in - A V.Small rucksac, bumbag etc just big enough to carry your personal snacks and drinks.
Usually we don't bother about proper lunches, instead focusing more on a big feed at Breakfast and Dinner and snacking during the day... (sandwiches can't just hack it underground)
Camera and something to protect it if you want pics...
What to wear under your caving suit...?
The air temp in Irish caves sits between 8-10C all year, regardless of what is happening outside. Water is colder.
Your big cave will be mainly dry, with a waist deep wade at the worst... With this in mind think about what you are wearing...
Normally under my caving oversuit I wear an all in one fleece suit... (about medium weight fleece)
That's all if I'm going to be active...
Too much you overheat and loose too water in perspiration, too little and it's cold and bits start to fall off.
I will sometimes wear a light thermal top if leading cause I'll be sitting about a fair bit.
Socks, either wetsocks or woolen socks as they keep the heat better than nylon ones...
What ever you wear, don't expect to be able to wash the mud out of it ever again....
On yer feet
Wellies are best, make sure they have a decent amount of tread left and try stay away from steel toecap ones as they have a habit of rubbing lots and I've seen some pretty nasty toes after a full day caving from steel boots...
If you've not got wellies, old hiking boots or similar that will give you some amount of lower leg/ankle protection...
Think wet, muddy, sharp pointy rock, what ever you wear you will want to to grip under these conditions
Hands...?
Those knitted gloves that have the palms and fingers dipped in rubber are cavers choice, you can pick them up in most garden/builder places for a few quid and they are the closest to cave proof gloves that you can get.
If you must insist in wearing your fancy seal skins/goretex/fleece gloves, be warned, they will last about 10 mins underground...
Extras...?
Buff/Balaclava
Hand Warmers (if you are a woose)
Bin bags for dirty stuff/makeshift seat protectors
Getting Moist...?
At least one of the caves will involve a swim/pull on rope... A wetsuit will make this bearable
I have very few that I can lend so try beg/borrow/steal one if you want to join in the fun...
Righto, my head is pickled now...
I'm off to bed...
Nite
-
Hey Drongo,
Thanks for all the info.
Didnt think you was looking to start so early. I might not be there till 1400 as I have to wait to get my car from the wife.
How dirty are we looking to get on the first day? No shower and going to bed dirty ain't a pretty picture and I best not tell the wife about no shower or she won't let me have the car.
Lenny
-
Thanks for the details, sounds like fun (but wet !).
Lenny, don't worry if its not for you, Id does sound pretty messy :D But maybe have a think if you still want to go, so we can get a replacement lined up....

Are you trying to get rid of me ??? ::)

Not at all! Just wouldn't want you get both wet and dirty ! :P
-
Hi Drongo
Great write up on kit/clothing required. Leaves nothing to the imagination!!! You make it sound awesome and I like the McD's breakfast idea to kick it all off ;)
If I don't get going on this one I'd defo like to give this a go another time, so you can keep me in mind.
Some more info...
No toilet/shower, but there is a fresh cold water pipe on the corner of the ruined cow shed.
I reckon a good rub down under a cold water pipe in the corner of a ruined cow shed would be the highlight of the trip for me ;D
-
Sounds like a crackin weekend. Raging i have to miss this, but if theres another one count me in!!
-
steel toe cap wellies not heard of those before.
-
Hi Drongo
Liam has offered me his place on this trip. I've edited your list of people going above.
See you on the 29th at McD's ;D

-
Drongo, is there anywhere we can have a camp fire or is there just the inside?
Just the inside fire...
-
just an ad on tv for a new film "Sanctum 3D"
looks like one to watch AFTER you go caving ;D
-
Righto, that's us booked into Marble Arch for the Sat...
Michelle at the centre has heard rumpled that it's going to be very cold below -15C on the mountain next week (though I've read nothing to clarify this)
So make sure you've a good sleeping bag or supply of blankets...
I've managed to grab a bag full of cars and a heap of ducks that we can burn to keep ourselves warm...
-
How close is the car park to where we r sleeping?
-
ill bring my big quilt with me then. :D
have the members of the forum ever beeb on a trip here before.

I had a poke about the club website... Like this page in particular: http://www.caving.club.qub.ac.uk/nfreshers.php Very funny!!!
I assume the Author of the club website writes the PTQ (http://quis.qub.ac.uk/ulster/2006/12/buy-ptq-people.html) in his spare time :D

excellent website ;D
spotted this fella on it
(http://www.caving.club.qub.ac.uk/images/whitefathers02.jpg)
so Dowser you should be ok as going topless seems to be all the rage underground
and its looks like my excuse is pathetic :'(
I'm claustrophobic. How could I go caving?
The number of times I've heard this is absolutely staggering. What a crap excuse! Most caves are roomy affairs, with no/not many tight squeezes, and those that there are, are short. Besides, going through a squeeze is no worse than lying underneath the clothes in bed. I don't know anyone who has ever gone caving and got so freaked by squeezes that they didn't enjoy themselves or come back for more.

Lenny and Darren... I could collect you both on Saturday morning if you like, to save you having to wait for the wife's car, and we could split the petrol... Don't panic Lenny!!! I'll be in the Merc, not the Jag, which isn't as heavy on the petroleum ::)
For dinner on Saturday I'd be happy enough with a camp style dinner and a few cold ones. I am planning on getting cleaned up after the caving but probably not clean enough to sit in a restaurant. It would also mean having a dedicated driver which isn't really fair on somebody... though if we do decide to go, I begsy it's not me driving :D

Oh, and I agree with Drongo... Plum Tomato, Cherry Tomato or just plain old tomato, they are all mingin' fried... Give me a big dollop of beans any day instead ;)

How far is the pub from where we are staying? and is it a walker friendly pub? (ie they dont care if you wear fleeces n whatnot?)
-
Pub is a bit far to walk when you are sober...
I don't mind driving... That will be 4 seats...
It's across the border in Blacklion, so bring your yoyo's if you have any (they do accept sterling, but sometimes run out of change and you end up with a load of foreign shrapnel in your pocket...
This place, you can wear pretty much what you want... The locals may turn their 3 green eyes at you for a bit when you walk in, but it's a friendly enough place, really...
-
hi phil got your pm mate. :)
yes use of your sleeping bag spare one i mean not the one your sleeping in ;D :D it greatly appreciated.

-
Breakfast - Communal (I'll stick you down to bring a loaf of bread and some generic yellow fat to spread on it)
Tea - Fend for yourself
If folks are wanting, we could probably sort out a chippy run, but we are stayin in the middle of no where, so it may be a hassle...

Donation to the cave rescue team for the loan of gear
Some ££ in case we end up in the pub (there are no cash machines after Enniskillen)
Phil likes Talisker or Highland Park - 15yrs or older...;o)
Oh, and bring some water as it looks like it's going to be a cold one, which means the tap may be frozen...!!
-
Thanks Drongo, you've put a lot of effort into this!
Can I get a bit of a feel, for how wet we're going to get, to help me choose what clothes to bring (i know you said old...)
Will we generally be walking through dry caves, with maybe ankle level water? Then maybe a bit of a swim near the end?
Do we need to be carrying our own towels in a water proof bag to dry off when we get out of the caves (or is the hut very handy to it?).
I got a new tent and would like to pitch it - is there suitable ground near the hut?
-
hi mate.
if u check in earlier posts we could be in waist deep water mate.

The first part of Marble Arch is dry - Once you leave the tourist path there is a quick few second wade through water that between thigh and waist deep.
John Thomas' Hole, which is another nearby one is extremly muddy...
Do we need to be carrying our own towels in a water proof bag to dry off when we get out of the caves (or is the hut very handy to it?).
You won't need to carry anything in the caves, bar a few snacks and maybe a drink...
The wet caves on Sunday, usually we just strip off at the road side, dive into cars, turn on heaters and get back to the hut as quick as we can to warm up...
I got a new tent and would like to pitch it - is there suitable ground near the hut?
Maybe, I've never looked... There is usually livestock about, once we've had a cow in the living room...
Maybe they will all be in bed for the winter...?
-
Sounds great, might even get me some nice cow-action too......

it appears i must have thrown out my old wellies that i just went looking for, i've a nice pair of comfy waterproof rigger boots, would they do? or would i be better with an old pair of hiking boots and maybe a pair of very thin "beach shoes" for the wading bits?
-
old hike boots, thick socks and wet feet is what I'd go for...

Day Two was the wet caves and I couldn't risk taking the camera, but Drongo has posted a few great photos of the wet caves above.
Now I know what it's like to be a Fraggle!!!

Check it again... I'm seeing them all ok and I've tried on another machine and it seems to be okay there too. There are lots, so it may just be taking time for them to load up.
Anybody else having problems viewing the pics???

Also, was it snowing in the kitchen when the boys were cooking and nobody noticed?! lmao

All working fine for me. Looks like an awesome weekend (if a little muddy!).

So who wants to write a blog (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/blog) post. This sounds like a trip that needs preserving!

I just put together a wee video.
Let me know what you think?

That's a great wee clip. It really shows just how tight some of the squeezes were that doesn't really come across in the photographs, which look tame in comparison.

Great vidoe capturing from the guy behind the camera. I just cut it down and edited it. What do you think of the program output?
-
Yeah the video output is very good. Glad the software worked out for you. I should have kept a copy for my own machine. It wasn't till I was half way home when I thought about it... Doh!!!

Count me out, my knees are still hurting thinking about it lol, It is a great experence.

I was hoping another trip would be organised, but after watching that video I'm not so sure. Started feeling uncomfortably claustrophobic watching it. Though saying that I'd still be foolish enough to sign up for the next one!

Dont let that video put you off. That was the only skinny bit.

Only a problem when yer feet don't touch the ground cause yer belly in hanging you up... ;)
Thinking of another date soon, watch this space...
