Just wondering if anyone owns a hand held weather station? It's something I'm quite interested in, all the more so now that we actually have some interesting weather! Don't really know where to start looking for one though, or what brand/model to go for. I know Silva make "atmospheric data centres" and there is one called the "Summit (http://www.silva.se/en/Products/Outdoor-Instruments/ADC---Atmospheric-Data-Center/?productId=%7b4895AE48-5230-49A3-8BC2-034E7D43B370%7d)" which seems to have what I'm looking for:
Wind Speed
Temperature
Altimeter
Barometer
I know Chris Townsend uses a Kestrel 4500, but its rather expensive. There is a lower spec Kestrel 2500 (http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=kestrel+2500&hl=en&prmd=ivns&cr=countryUK%7CcountryGB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=h4kQTc2pG8SohAeH_pm3Dg&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CD8QrQQwAA) that has the above features, but its more expensive than the Silva. To be honest I was hoping to spend less than £50, but perhaps like all things you need to spend a little bit extra to get something that is actually accurate and usable? If anyone knows anything about these gizmos your advice would be appreciated :)

I'd love one that did wind and temp but they tend to be expensive. Altimeter I can do without since the GPS does that.

I don't think the Silva is a lesser choice. They make good, accurate kit.

Wind and temp are the two things I'm most interested in, as from the New Year I want to start keeping a log of all the walks I do. Would be nice to be able to add in wind speed and temperature details to the log.
Silva Summit currently looks like it ticks all the boxes, and as you say Craig Silva have a good reputation for reliable gear. Wondering if anywhere local stocks it though as would be nice to get a look at first. Ebay doesnt appear to have any unfortunately!

You'll be wanting GPS logging too then. It's very useful, I have most of the routes I've walked saved - it's great for planning.
