Title: First attempt at an Igloo
Post by: Dowser on December 17, 2010
My kids and they're friends where out playing in the snow today and came up with the idea of making an Igloo.  After watching them scrapping about on their hands and knees, getting nowhere, I took pity on them a went out and joined in armed with a couple of buckets:

It turn out pretty well for a first attempt, took about an hour to build, but could definately have been built quicker, only I was making it up as I went along.  Now that I know what to do, the next one would be built a whole lot quicker.

If I get a chance I'm gonna build one of these in the Mournes and spend the night in it.  Gonna look funny walking up into the hills with a bucket but hey ho... I'll be able to fill it with beer and snow when I'm finished building and enjoy a cold one in my cosy igloo  ;D

Brilliant job.

Looks like you got a wee Bushcraft club all ready to help out.

They'll all laugh and talk about your efforts with fondness for years to come......lol

I'm impressed... glad I still have plenty of snow left on the lawn and didn't waste it on a snowman... igloo is definitely the way to go 8)

Wrong type of snow here for an Igloo. Too powdery. I made a Quinzee though a couple of weeks ago.

Quick update on the Igloo.  I've got squatters!!!  My neighbour slept in it last night with his 4 year old kid.

They crawled into it about 10pm and are still in there pushing out zzzzz's as I write this (08:49am)

I have to say I'm very jealous and would have probably done it myself only the neighbours think I'm mad enough as it is, without sleeping in the street in an igloo.

Makes me want to build one of these in the Mournes even more now!!!  If your wondering why it's a bit lopsided it's because there has been about 100 people through it since it was built and kids came down from another street and were jumping into the side of it  ???

Brilliant, I started one but soon got bored. Washing up basins provide the rectangular block.

I tried one with boys today but when we got closer to the top it kept falling over but still it was fun And it ended up looking a bit like a church

Nice one...  When your wife finds out how much you really paid you'll be out there for a week.  Better run a power cable out to it  ;D

Brilliant job Dowser, I take my hat off to you!  Shouldn't it be in DPM though?  :D

We must have had the wrong type of snow in my neck of the woods, I tried building a snowman with my 5 year old but it was too powdery!  :'(

Aye you could barely make a snow ball up our way.  Mind you someone did make a ..... shall we say carrot and two brussel sprouts, about 7 foot tall at that.  Just at the Hillhead Road roundabout on the Larne Line.

Apparently the "alternative snowman" is all the rage this year. I've not seen one but hear them being talked about plenty.

My half attempt, it would have been finished if the basin had not split.

We tested it in the work car park and down some grassy banks when the kids left. Along with the help of some silicone machine lube the thing went like something slippery off a shovel.

i never thought id see the day where in northern ireland you could build an igloo in a front garden.
looks like the kids had a great time.

you can look back at this for yrd to come.
