Following on from the success of our first ever Walk Ten on the 3rd September 2010, with 668 participants raising 2350 hours of nursing care for cancer patients in our local community, participants will have the opportunity to choose between two Walk Ten events in 2011.
Shanes Castle, Antrim
Friday 19th August 2011
This exclusive venue is absolutely spectacular and a place of outstanding beauty. Many of the public have not seen Shanes Castle and its surrounding grounds and this is a fantastic opportunity to take part in something very special while taking in this venue. Shane's Castle is the family seat of the O'Neills of Clandeboy. The Demesne is one of the most beautiful and well maintained in Ireland with a rich variety of fauna, flora, insect and bird life. There has been a herd of fallow deer at Shane's Castle for many years. Although the Castle has been in ruins since the fire of 1816, the remaining structure, including a unique Camellia House is a striking feature in the landscape.
The graveyard and family vault are all that remain of the village of Edenduffcarrick, which originally almost surrounded the Castle.
Stormont Estate, Belfast
Friday 2nd September 2011
Stormont Estate is set in 235 acres. The area holds Northern Ireland’s parliament building and Stormont Castle. The Parliament Building is one of Belfast’s most iconic landmarks and boasts the one mile Prince of Wales Avenue leading to its entrance. You’ll have exclusive access to the grounds as a Walk Ten participant.
A genuine quote that came in that sums up Walk Ten:
“Through the District Nursing Service we were provided with carers from Marie Curie Cancer Care but my mother wasn’t sure how she would feel about this. Then Pam, our Marie Curie Nurse turned up; a total stranger at 10 pm, but a trusted friend by 7am”.
