I didn't think I could pass on the fact that the new Harry Potter movie has a suprising amount of camping and backwoods scenes.
It would be fair to say Ron can't put up a tent and Hermiones fire laying was complete pants :o ::) :P

yes loved the tardis tent, and wouldn't hermione's handbag be great for backpacking, yeah i'd look a bit silly with a handbag, but it'd be worth it ;D
film wasn't bag either, very close to the book, but i wonder how much people would enjoy it not having read the books, me thinks they'd be a bit confused ???

Tell you what, there were some prime bivvy locations in that film! There was one particular scene on the edge of a cliff face that just had a ledge of green grass down from the summit... would love to know where that was!
If I was a wizard I think I would have opted for a sil-nylon or cuben fibre tent rather than canvas though :D

I know its a magic tent and all that, but the way those guy ropes cross over, shouldn't it fall down ???

Hmmm... not much experience with that type of tent! Kat could probably tell us better, looks like the type the Girl Guides use alot (minus the bunk beds inside etc.) ;)
It does look like it has a solid ridge line, so perhaps by pulling the two poles in towards each other it keeps the ridge line taut. Can't believe we are discussing a tent in a HP film though..!

I've stayed in a tent like that a few times (not a magic one - isn't it great how you have to keep qualifying that?). The most annoying thing was the way they close up and the ends. They just have a series of cord loops that zig-zag down the side drawing the two sides together through eyelets and looping into each other. The wind just howls through the ends and it's a bit tricky to get out for a pee in the middle of the night. Easier to dive under the side since there was no sewn in ground sheet. They were called Icelandics back then but I only ever got to use them in Gosford Forest Park!

Same sort of tent that I had when I was in scouts. heavy when wet and the poles are a weapon in them selfs.

I remember the old icelandics! Awesome tents. we had big green ones in the scouts and they slept about fifteen people! Pretty sure I learnt never to cross the guy lines (or was that streams?) from another film!
