I'd been considering getting a dog for a while but I wanted to wait till my kids were up a bit before making the jump. I now have a whole squad of dog walkers at the ready so I reckon the time is right.
I was out on an overnighter recently with Chuck and he had his dog, Bow the Border Terrier, with him and that gave me the final push I needed. It was great fun having Bow around the campsite and the Mournes did not pose any sort of a challange to him.
After a few weeks of research I decided to go for a Miniature Schnauzer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_Schnauzer). From what I've read this breed of dog should be able to cope very well with the Mournes and once fully grown will be able to out-walk me twice over!!!
Here's a few pics of Sal, and now that she has a decent Hoodie, hopefully you'll get to meet her in person at the Christmas Camp:
PS... The Hoodie is only for the hills till she's a bit older. She'll be going au naturale once she's grew herself a decent coat of her own :D

Mate you have dpm issues! I would seriously consider getting some sort of professional help! dogs are awesome in the hills though i'm sure she'll be able to tire you out soon enough!

Sal will make great company for my Schnauzer, Dylan! Although I will warn you that Dylan hasn't had the snip snip so perhaps they shouldn't meet just yet ;)
And I agree with Chris, I'm surprised your hobo stove gas cylinder didn't get an airbrushing in woodland green :D

Incredibly cute! this set of photos has significantly improved my chances of convincing my dogophobe wife to let me get a small dog.

I've been thinking of getting a dog lately, always had big dogs before (really tempted to get an alsation) but something like little Sal might fit into my lifestyle a bit easier, love the dpm stuff ;D

Schnauzers make great wee dogs. They have bags of energy and are a really tough little dog! Very good health as well and our fella has had very few problems in his 10 years. Best of all their coat doesnt cast so you don't need to worry about getting your Berghaus fleece covered in dog hairs :)

I have a springer and she's a brilliant dog with a clown personality and loads of loyalty. Beware though as I have a hyper one, although springers tend to be high energy dogs even within the same litter you'll get one's more loopy than others. If you have the luxury of getting in at first choice of a litter try and choose a calmer one, I wish I had. I didn't get any choice as the other puppies had all gone and my dog was the last one left. I kinda now know why....
I still love her to bits but no harm in passing on a realistic view.
My sister has a Minny Schnauzer, hers is a bit yappy but if yours is you'll already know about it. She got it because the breed is known to have loads of stamina, basically the only 'small' breed that will take a couple of mountain tops in it's stride. Take it easy in snow because the wee dog is so close to the ground, their eyes get damaged with the glare. I read an account of one little Schnauzer in the states that did charity hikes and ended up having cataracts that needed surgery to remove them.

Fingers crossed mine won't be a wee yappy one. To be honest, up to now you would nearly swear she was a Mute... except for a wee whimper at bed time, when she's being left alone in the kitchen, there's hardly a peep out of her. I went for a wee bitch for this reason... they tend to be a bit calmer than dogs in general.
I've read the same about the stamina that these dogs have. They also tend to be very smart and easily trained. I'm really looking forward to my first outing with her. We'll see how obedient she is on the 4th December when I'm pulling her off my Turkey Dinner in Donard Wood :D

Bow used to go mad barking at the next door neighbour's dogs or anyone else walking past the house. So one Saturday I sat out for the afternoon with a big jug of cold water at the ready, the first time he barked I threw the water over him, likewise the second time he barked.....there was no third time. :D Did the same thing to stop him barking at the postman, used a small cup of water to make the mopping up of the hallway less work intensive :)
Letting them socialise off the lead early on will also stop the whole excitable-yappy-dog-on-a-lead (aka small dog syndrome) as well.
It's all about identifying and correcting unacceptable behaviour and rewarding everything else. Don't be afraid to be strict on her for the first couple of months, it pays off on the long run.

I know some humans with that syndrome as well......
