Title: Quick Overnighter - 28th Oct 10
Post by: RedLeader on October 27, 2010
We're going to take a quick overnighter on Thu 28th Oct to the Douglas Crag area that Chuck pointed out. Plan is to leave Carrick Little car park at teatime-ish. Isn't a long hike, just a jaunt up the Annalong Valley then bivvy on the side of Binnian for some craic round the hobo stove and maybe a snifter of scotch to keep out the cold.

(Info on the spot here (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1367.msg12480#msg12480) and here (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1367.msg12482#msg12482) - Cheers Chuck.)

Wife's birthday tomorrow....would be a dead man walking if I suggested hitting the hills that night (even tho we'll be having a meal in Dundrum..not 15mins away...hmm)

ps. found this shaky cam video that I took the day of the Binnion Bivvy from that spot, shows views over Annalong Wood, paths to Blue Lough and Cove Cave, all with Donard in the distance:

I'm not going to be able to make this one either I'm afraid... work commitments :(  Have a good one though, that looks like a cracking bivvy spot and I'd be keen to try it out some time!

Just back from work so no chance of me getting up to the hills, very windy out there too (gusting 50mph in the lowlands  :o ) one of those nights where you drive along the country roads a lot slower just in case there is a tree down around the corner!

If you meet some yahoos in Annalong wood thats my sons friends, he was out with them there last night, told him to bring the warm sleeping bag but he brought the ultralight summer one  ::) but there is hope for him yet, i had him weighing his rucksack and i bestowed upon him the virtues of goretex  ;D , then he borrowed all my goretex gear and now it stinks of campfire  >:(

Last night was one of those nights were I was truly thankful I couldn't get the time off work!  Not a night I would fancy sleeping on the side of Binnian :o  Good night for testing kit in foul weather though!

We're home and as ever, it was a blinder. Weather was pretty crappy - really windy but it only rained on and off until the middle of the night. Tarp held up well and bivi bags didn't leak so it was all good. Only got a brief glimpse of the valley from up there when the clouds briefly lifted and the view was awesome. Definately a top bivvy spot but only when it's not too windy. Plus it isn't very level so tents would be a problem. It's not the easiest spot to find in the dark and there's a good drop off the crag so you need to be careful. Didn't get many pics because there was permanent thick mist which made for crappy photos.

We did see people in Annalong Wood on the way by. They shouted to us as we walked by in the dark.

Brave man!  Did you use those Alpkit Y-beam pegs with the tarp?  I ordered some but was surprised when they arrived and saw they are like a cross shape.  Guess thats why they are called "Y" beams, but I was expecting more like a "V" peg.  Still, seem like a good job for the money and are nearly as light as the titanium V pegs at a fraction of the cost.

Speaking of tarps, was it the DD you were under or a surplus basha?

The alpkit pegs are excellent (but wont fit through an eyelet). They are a bit tough on the hands in hard ground but they definitely hold well. Was using the army basha but it was pitch dark and blowing a gale when we arrived so we only put one up. It stuck the fierce winds fine so although it's a shade heavier than the DD it's definitely sturdier.
