As well as everyone's favourite (*) Meelmore Lodge and the super secret one near Bloody Bridge (**), here's another possible place for secure parking. This one is not quite so handy but is good if you are heading up the Sandy Brae towards Great Gully/Eagle Mountain.

(**) PM me for details

I second the bloody bridge one .. Cheers again chuck ;D

So are you allowed to park there of you aren't using the hostel?
-
No idea, that's why I've used the word possible. Someone just needs to ask nicely and see what happens...
-
I looked into this one a while back and my understanding is that you can park there (for cash) even if you aren't using the hostel.
-
Excellent. I've no problem paying a couple of quid for peace of mind and to keep these establishments with an income...

Just to bring this post back from the grave. I came across this info:
Secure car parking is available at Cnocnafeola Centre, Attical
Occasionally people walking in the Mournes have problems with parking. Car windows have been broken and items stolen, the occasional car has even been burnt out .
Safe and secure car parking is available at Cnocnafeola Centre for people who wish to stay overnight on the Mountains. The cost is £3 per car per night . Before leaving they could ensure we know the car reg and other details etc. We will ensure the gate is closed. We will leave a form to fill in on return. We can offer showers etc and a cup of tea on return.
Walkers can arrange with Cnocnafeola Centre to be left out to the hills (at a little extra cost).

So they now provide parking, transport, food and showers...I think that's worth encouraging.

Brilliant stuff, thanks for the info chuck!
-
Great stuff Chuck, was news to me that they had secure parking. We'll check it out for the next overnighter. Maybe a Doan summit camp is called for.

I knew about this safe parking but is there any where you can walk to from here? Also the link you provided for map/directions (http://www.mournehostel.com/map2.asp)
does not work any more....
The lady that run's this place is very nice and accommodating.... I ran an event from here many years ago.....
-
Link fixed, thanks.
As where to walk from there: It's about a mile from both: the Bann's Road that leads to Lough Shannagh and (as RL says) Doan (route (http://walkni.com/Walk.aspx?ID=133)) and also another fav. of mine is a walk up the lane called the Sandy Brae, then along the Windy Gap/Pigeon Rock River (look out for the Great Gully) to the Windy Gap then left onto Eagle Mountain and back down the cliff path to the top of the Sandy Brae again.

I've spent very little time on this side of the Mournes. Maybe it's time for a change.
Wonder what Crocknafeola Wood is like for camping. It's very close to the road.

I contacted Mourne Lodge about parking and received this email:
Thank you for this. You can park in our car park and please close the gate afterwards. The cost for the overnight will be £5 per car. Hope this is acceptable. We would take your registration number etc and if you do not see anyone at the centre you can leave the £5 in an envelope with your details in the red letter box. This is checked 2 or 3 times a day and we can pick this up. It would be good if you would let us know in advance. This weekend we have a large group coming to stay so the park may be busy but I’m sure you will find a spot. We never have any trouble with cars so I hope all will be ok for you.
So it's fine to park there but is £1 more expensive than Meelmore Lodge.

might seem a lot but i had to pay £10 for >4hrs parking at Snowdon :o

To be fair though Slievenaglogh is not Snowdon.
-
If we start using it regularly we might well squeeze a bit'o discount.
