Title: The Annalong Valley, Percy Bysshe and Cove Caves 9th-10th Oct
Post by: Dowser on October 06, 2010
About a year ago I caught a show on BBC Northern Ireland called "Off the Beaten Track" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blueprint/offthebeatentrack/binnian.shtml/) and the presenter spent a day in the hills exploring Percy Bysshe and Cove Caves and I would like to track these down myself and do a bit of an overnight bivvi.

By DJing/hosting a full on Disco for my 3yo last weekend; including Laser Lights, Strobe Lights, Black Lights, Mirror Ball and Smoke Machine I have earned just enough Brownie Points to allow me to escape to the hills for a day or so.

I plan to be in Newcastle about 18:00 and will be setting off from Carrick Little car park (J 345 219).  I would like to have started from Silent Valley car park, for a change of scenary, but I spoke to the manager up there and they don't let cars stay overnight in the carpark :(.  If anyone knows of a safe place to ditch a car around the Silent Valley locale please let me know.

It will more than likely be a bit of a night hike to Cove Cave with sunset being around 18:50 and then up Sunday morning for a bit of breakfast and some exploring/amatuer caving.

If anybody would like to join me you would be very welcome.

Good stuff Lenny.  If you have problems getting access to the car let me know... I'm sure I could give you a lift.  I can't help out with permission from the wife, that's up to you  ;D

I have planned to be up that way on Sunday also.  Was thinking of doing a circuit around that area (Binnian/Lamagan etc), might head up the valley first and see if I bump into anyone.  Mind you looking out for the guy in camoflage gear sounds like a plan doomed to fail.

On Sunday you could do the Devills Coachroad onto Beg then back across Cove/Lamagan/Binnian.

I've got that series here. They are 100MB .avi files. If anyone wants a copy of them give me a PM, I can either upload them somewhere, MSN transfer or if you know your way around uTorrent I have a couple of invites to the site I got them from.

When I was last at Silent Valley park in June the question of overnight parking came up with one of the Security Guards.  Their attitude was that at lock-up time if there was a car there then the occupants most likely would be back the next morning.

I imagine that leaving it there wouldn't be a problem.  The old saying "don't ask me then I don't have to give an answer/turn a blind eye."  It's not as if they're inundated.  At least the car would be safer there than at a remote car park.

I think your right Surf'... I shouldn't have bothered asking.  There are no clamping signs up and it's not like they are gonna tow my motor into the reservoir.  Car park closes at 4pm, from October onwards apparently, so if I'm there on time I'll probably chance it and let you all know the outcome. "He who dares... wins" an all that  :P.

Thanks for your input Surf'  ;D

If you do leave your motor in Silent Valley prob best to leave a note saying where you are. They might send out mountain rescue otherwise.

Bit of an update on this one.  I got a chance to watch the "Off the Beaten Track" episode that Chuck very kindly got for me and I have decided on my bivvi spot for this evening... Cove Cave.  I've cut the episode down and you can watch it here on Youtube:
.

I'm gonna be setting off around 4pm and heading to the Percy Basshe caves for a bit of a look about.  Just realised I've been past them many times before but just never realised they where there :P  I'm then gonna head on over to Cove Cave that you see in the video (J 337 260) and would expect to be there around 6pm to set up camp at the top opening of the cave. It would be a bad time to discover that I'm a sleep walker  :o

I'll let you know what it's like sleeping in a cave tomorrow.

Another successful NI WIld adventure was had.  Didn't get visiting Percy Bysshe because traffic was awful getting down to Newcastle on Saturday, and I was late setting off from Carrick Little carpark, but it gives me a great excuse to get back in the hills again another day.  From Carrick Little I headed straight for Cove along a well defined path as I was keen to get to Cove Cave before dark so that I could explore the possiblity of actually sleeping in it.

It would definately be possible to bivvi in Cove Cave itself, in a couple of different areas, but I think I would only do it for a limited number of reasons:

1. Just to be able to say I've slept in a cave.
2. The weather was really chucking it down and I wanted a bit of shelter.

After exploring the cave we opted to go for a short night hike over Cove Mountain and then back the the entrance of the cave where we could enjoy the comfort of the Bracken and dry ground.  It would have been quite difficult to get comfortable in the cave and your gear would take bit of a battering on the stone/gravel floors.  Another reason that I'm glad we decided to Bivvi outside the cave was that Rock Climbers arrived around 22:00 and abseiled all around the entrance till about 02:00.  It would have been difficult to get a decent kip with all that going on  :o

Anyways... Here's a few photos from the weekend:

Weather was a bit overcast on arrival Saturday afternoon.  Don't think I've ever seen Binnian in the sun.  I sure it must have it's own weather system!!!

This path that runs alongside Annalong forest leads you right to the foot of Cove Cave.  If your navigation isn't to good this is the walk for you and the family.  I wouldn't like to think anybody could get lost on this one!!!

I only strayed from the path once and it was all because of this little tree/bush.  It's the only one that's managed to get itself to any sort of height off the ground for miles around.  I just couldn't resist getting a photo!

This is Cove on the approach from Annalong.  The entrance to the cave is just visible on a clear day.

This is the entrance to the main cave.  Bit of a scramble up in. I took my rucksack in with me the first time because I was on my own but I would recommend you leave it outside unless your planning on spending the night in there.  I would advise that you do carry the basics though, like a head torch and a phone or radio incase something happens when you are in there.  The rocks inside are extremely slippy due to the damp.

This pic was taken from just a short distance into the cave.  The Cave stretches back about 30 metres before you reach the small exit hole at the rear.  Even getting up to the hole is quite precarious as it is an accent of about 10 metres over a collection of boulders that are difficult to negotiate.

This is the view to the back of the cave with the exit hole clearly visible.  It's difficult to capture in a photogragh just how steep the scramble is and just how small the whole is.

This is the view looking back at the exit hole.  It really is no wider than the width of your shoulders so if you have a fear of small spaces I wouldn't be suggesting you tackle this.  A certain degree of contortionism is required to get through and getting back down is no easy feat either.  This space would be big enough for two or three people to bivvi but it would over a great deal of protection from the weather.

This is a close-up shot of the exit hole from the inside.  I should have put something else in the picture to give you an idea of scale but take it from me it's small.

This is one of the ledges inside the cave. I had to ditch my ruck at this stage because I wasn't getting it any further.

This shot is taken from about half way into the cave looking back towards the main entrance. There is a lot of flash being used in this photo.  At the rear of the cave it is almost completely dark, so take a torch.

No flash used on this one.

Cave exploration finished, Bivvys set up and food ate.  Ahhh... time to relax for a few drinkies by the Hobo Stove  ;D

Although I look relaxed in this photo I'm actually praying for a dry night because by now I've just realised I've forgot to bring my Bivvi Bag... Doh!

Could a photograph be anymore welcoming  ::)

As the evening got colder we took it in turns using Bow, the dog, as a hot water bottle.

My turn to get warmed up a bit!!!

Well, bottle of Scotch drunk... time to settle down for the night.  notice the lack of Bivvi Bag.  Thank God for Gore-tex waterproofs.

Yeap... I made it through the night and yes, that is a bin bag I've got my feet in due to the lack of bivvi bag.  Don't know what made me think it would make any difference if it started to chuck it down!

Honestly... I did get a good nights sleep.

Our Bivvys set up at the foot of Cove and Chuck enjoying the scenary after breakfast.

Bacon and Beans.  Handy to make and very tasty.

Bow checking out my Tarp setup.  Could have done with him there last night for a bit of heat.

One man and Somebody elses dog... (Well Chucks)

Foreman came up and joined us after breakfast so here's me heading back into the cave to give a guided tour.

Foreman looking up through the exit hole at the rear of the cave.  He decided against trying to squeeze through the gap.

Photo of me from the ground were the cave emerges on the side of the cliff face.  Honestly, I am up there somewhere but the camoflauge doesn't help ;)

And another one of me... This time take from the bivvi site.

Getting embarrasing now but there is me outside the front of the cave.  Getting value for money out of this one.  You'd think I'd just conquered Everest the way I'm standing there!

Another shot of Cove from below.

A panoramic taken on the way back to Annalong Wood. I'm pretty certain the Hill in the centre of this photograph is where the Percy Bysshe cave is located.

Well... There ya go.  Cove Cave, definately worth a visit.  ;D

There would be plenty of sites to pitch a tent near the caves.  You would need to look about a bit to get a completely level spot, but their would defo be place to set up for the night.

There's no local water at the caves but if your coming up from Annalong Wood you cross two rivers and you can stock up there.  From the Brandy Pad direction you've got the Annalong River itself to obtain water.  From the Caves you would only be 15-20 mins away from a water source.

Looks like an awesome trip Dowser, well done!  Not sure if I'd fit through that exit hole in the cave to be honest... and even if I slimmed down I'm not sure if I'd fancy giving it a go  :o

Judging by the photos I'd say you are getting to grips with LR3 nicely?  Were they shot with the LX5?  There are some real nice shots in there.

LR3 is the ticket.  All were shot on the LX5 but only in jpeg format so quality could be a lot better.  Didn't go for RAW because the RAW format from the LX5 is not recognised yet by any of my software with it being so new  >:(

I really do need to sit down and work the LX5 out properly.  There were a few times I could not get AP and SP to do what I wanted them to do.  Think I must have been doing something I was doing wrong though... there are a lot of buttons/settings to get your head around!

I'm keen to do a trip to the Black Stairs Waterfalls for a few atmospheric, slow shutter, photos soon.

Took the wife up to the cave on Sunday, she hammered on up right to the exit hole before finally turning back. (I went no further than half way up) She wants to come back again and try to get right up through the exit whole...I suggested a rope and pully...got a rock thrown at me for my trouble...

Turns out the exit hole is dead easy to get to from the top...the wife, me and the dog where sitting at the exit while splitting a chocolate bar when two guys (one the gent who works on the 3rd floor of Tisos) popped up through the exit hole, don't think they where too impressed with us 'tourists' sitting in the sun while they struggled up through the cave packs and all :)
