I did try this a few months back but I'm such a massive spoon I couldn't get it to work, even though it's pretty easy to make. In my defence I made it out of 2 beer tins which I had just previously drunk the contents of.

I made one from 7up cans the same as the one in the pictures above. (drinking the contents didn't seem to affect me ;))
but I didn't like the fact that you need a separate pot stand.

so when I came across the Lynx stove http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53533 I had another go.

For some reason there was a can of Lynx in the bathroom cabinet so with hacksaw, drill and sandpaper I spent a couple of hours in creative mode.

When I finished that one, I teste4d it.  It worked fine, but the flame goes out when the meths level drops below the inner wall, so I nipped out and got another can of lynx (our garden smelled great by this time) and made a second, better one.

i haven't used it in anger yet - but I've tested it, and boil times are pretty good, it's robust, very lightweight and at two for a fiver, you can't argue with the price.

I've still been meaning to play around with home made alcohol stoves.  The Lynx can is the one that appeals to me most, but I'm still a bit cautious about drilling into one!

You wont be making one of these from a propane gas bottle then.

Think I told you the story about when I took apart a butane gas cylinder to use it for storing compressed air?  I still bear the scars (psychological scars!) :D

I had a go at one on Monday when I was off. It turned out ok but it was thrown together. I would be quite tempted to machine a nice one out of brass to see how it goes but for the time and effort it would be cheeper to buy one.

I had no meths and had to rely on acetone,,,,,, lets not go there,,,,, the garage nearly ended up in flames.

@J loving the propane stove, nice and light weight, what we talking KG?

Lets just say, you wouldn't want to carry it on your back. However, as I'm typing I'm thinking empty propane tank = stove, full propane tank = jet pack!!
