Title: Night Hike - Meelmore & Meelbeg - 8 Jun 10
Post by: RedLeader on June 01, 2010
Continued from: http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1108 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1108)

How about Meelmore and Meelbeg on Tuesday 8th June 10 meeting at Meelmore Lodge at 7pm.

We'll aim to do Chucks route which is as follows and should be 6 miles or so:
Quote
If the weather is good and the ground dry (and the walkers comfortable with the look of it):

    * Up the gully to Spellack
    * Slieve Meelmore Summit
    * Dinner/snak/coffee break
    * (depending on time) Follow the wall to Slieve Meelbeg
    * (depending on time) Down via Fofanny Dam or double back a bit and down via Fofanny Wood/car park direction
    * Along the wall following the Mourne/Ulster way back to Mellmore Lodge..

If it's wet or we're not 100% comfortable with the gully route, we 'sprint' toddle gently along beside the Trassey Track and head up to Meelmore via the wall coming from Bearnagh. Adds an extra 0.5 mile onto the route, but the path is more mature.

Just so there's organisation of some sort we'll aim to leave Meelmore at 7pm but in the event that anyone hasn't turned up we'll wait until 730 then set off regardless. If you want to pm me I'll give you my mobile number so you can let us know if you're running late.

I'm heading up on Wednesday evening, I'll time it.

Tempted to grab a bag of chips on the way through Dundrum....was I just unlucky one time last year or are the chips from the "Bayside Catch" chippy always drippin' in grease? (not been back since)

You seem to be only about 10mins away from me, so if you are stuck, hit me with a PM, I could pick you up (dog as well if you want, I'll have my hound along, but there's a fair bit of room -and dog hair- in my RAV4) then head onto B'hinch from yours.

Not in Meelmore, I've checked....twice...how about a nice wee cup of tea (http://www.meelmorelodge.com/images/DSCF0005.JPG) instead?

Anyhow...Below is the GPS log from the recce I did tonight.

Went up beside the Trassey River rather than up the gully to Spellack.

Started 6.30 finished 9.30.

I tend to crack on a bit esp. uphill...so unless folks are really keen to come down in the dark (along a rather boggy section above Fofanny Reservoir), we may want to think about just doing Meelmore leaving Meelbeg for another time and going up to the summit of Meelbeg, then backtrack the way we came and exiting the mountain via the Fofanny Woods valley rather than past Fofanney Reservoir.

Decision can be made on the day as there are a couple of escapes routes.

Spoiler: Pics and route notes from the recce. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/sets/72157624194191202/)

I attached your route on a map.

I'm not too worried about the dark as long as I'm home for midnight-ish. We did Donard, Commedagh and Binnian in Nov/Dec evenings last year - we just all brought head torches.

Thanks for the offer chuck, situation has developed become slightly more complicated! Car needs a ton of work doing but If everything works out I may have it back for tues. However I'm now working on tues untill 1800 so If some kind soul was passing a lift would be much appreciated if I'm car-less! this might put you guys out time wise though as the traffic's still awful at that time it could take well over an hour to get to melmore. Might be best to count me out due to unforeseen circumstances and I'll catch the next one.

We had a bit of a sort out on boots and there were loads of ones with the box missing so they've been reduced, might be able to grab yourself a bargin. There's even a few 4 season B1's for Andy!

Is the gullie a scramble?
Title: Re: Night Hike - Meelmore & Meelbeg - 8 Jun 10
Post by: ChuckMcB on June 07, 2010
It's steep, but not a hands and knees affair, but it's quite (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/4665325115/) grassy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/4665325201/) so can be slippy in the wet.

I would be more comfortable with the group going around the longer way beside Trassey River (as I did last week (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1120.0;attach=279;image)). On the night, if anyone fancies the look of the gully route, as long as they have someone with them, fire on ahead.

ps. I'm aiming to be in the car park for 6.30 to grab a bite of food before the start.

Don't worry if it's not possible, I'll catch you all again another time.

Considering their pricing the only Rab item I'm ever likely to own is the bottle opener that Cotswolds gave me at the Andy Kirkpatrick lecture :)

Rab stuff is very reasonably priced. especially when it comes to the likes of soft shells and insulating layers.

The rest of the group should be tucked up in their beds for the last couple of hours, but because of an errant dog I've only just got home. Boy I could murder a bag of chips. :) nite nite

Was a top walk and great to meet Craig and Chuck. We did Meelmore and Meelbeg from Meelmore Lodge with the original 15 people cut down a shade to 4 (75% attrition rate - we know you were all just afraid of the weather ;)). It was 7.15 miles with 686m of ascent. The weather wasn't as bad as forecast, very foggy with low cloud but by the time were coming by Fofanny Dam it was pitch dark and we could only see about 5m - that's our excuse for the slight detour we took  ::)

So what's next!! Back to http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1120 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1120) for discussions!!

Yup, was good walk, interesting wee scramble going up Meelmore, never done that side of the wall before.

Even with the fog and wind, the weather was on our side, the wall protected us from the worst of the wind (once we figured out which part of the wall to stand behind) and the drizzle while coming down from Meelbeg was as bad as it got IMHO.

Good to meet you guys. Sorry for breaking up the party at the end (small ginger dog will not be coming on any other NI-Wild gigs). Ended up doing 10.1 miles (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/4684901022/sizes/m/). It actually turned out very calm, no drizzle, no wind, warm, but the fog really closed in, used a couple of glow sticks to make sure I stayed on the path. Foolishly I phoned the wife to let her know I would be late owing to 'misplacing' the dog. She insisted on driving down (against my advice) and just sat in the car, arm folded. Both dog and I felt it advisable to 'bivvy' in the lounge last night..I suspect I'm grounded this weekend...  :-[

No photos from this side...too busy walking.

They certainly latched onto him. Next time we'll throw your two up Hare's Gap...that'll take the wind out of their sails ;D

Glad Bo was safe and well - all part of excitement of the outdoors! Surely the wife'll realise it was fairly unavoidable (I'd have blamed the dog but I have low morals ;))

Sorry I didn't get much of a chance to chat. I was (as usual) running late and didn't want to keep anyone back any further. You met Chuck and Chris (they were on time). I came later with the walking poles and with Craig (twentyclicks) as a passenger.

You're being kind...the blame/responsibility is always with the owner.

Super wee jaunt with the lads last night.  Pleasant temperature and pretty stable weather.  We generally couldn't see anything, but it took until about 10:30 before it actually got dark.  Chuck; glad you captured the rebel dog and didn't have to spend the whole night rambling the hills!

Thanks to J for transporting me.  I definitely hope to make more of these evenings.

Yeah, work permitting!  As I don't start until 11:30 on Sunday, might be able to do a Saturday evening sometime with an early leave...

Like your style...Ohh yea, think one of your two got a bit of dust on my car as well, you can send them around any-time over the weekend to clean my car as well  ;)

Good to meet you as well. While I may threaten to "kick the wee ginger sh1te up the arse when I get hold of him", I've had dogs long enough to know that is counter productive....can't say the same for my wife....when we got home she was all out of lollipops (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=today+i%27m+handing+out+lollipops+and+ass-whoopins+and+right+now+i%27m+all+out+of+lollipops).  ;D
