Was rather bored ::) earlier so I decided to make a fire steel with one of the Ferrocerium rods I ordered ages ago. I do a fair bit of wood turning so I had a spare bit of polyester casting resin left, with a bit of colour( black with red swirls) a piece of rosewood burl, glue and a late the result is below.

Very nice, very neat handle. After you lathed it did it need a lot polishing to bring up that shine?
I've never seen Ferrocerium up close, was expecting it to have a rough surface.
...was going to ask what the beads are for....but I reckon they are not needed for the fire starting process ;)

very little finishing was required a 10 second sand with 1200 grit wet and dry and a polish with burnishing crème and for the wood insert a rub with boiled linseed oil and a finish of wax. Like anything, the key is razor sharp tools.
The bracelet is just there to stop it rolling away lol
Ferrocerium comes like the light my fire, fire steels with a black covering; I just sanded this off rather than striking it off.

Looks good. You should put it on eBay. Never know, you might make a couple of quid.

That is beautiful work! Well done! J's right, set up sellin' them to folks. Might as well get paid for doin' what ya like doin'.
Wife got me one with an antler handle as a gift and I use it constantly. Works great, makes others envious....perfect gift.
