Title: Jetboil PCS
Post by: Matthew on May 27, 2010
Just got me one of these. £50 new from the Bay can't be bad.

I have one - it's awesome. Only problem is they're like the supermodel of the stove world - a bit single purpose :D
For boiling water and ready to eat meals that just need heating it really is the Daddy.

I got the new Flash version recently, can't wait to try it out.

Impressed by size and neatness.

Woo..That's a big puppy. How stable is it once it's full of water? I presume the cup bit clips onto the rest of the cooker?

Ha Ha I love the supermodel analogy. I’m only looking at it as a water boiler I have my main Nova+ stove for more substantial meals.

I see what you mean about stability, I guess it depends on the diameter of the gas cartridge you go for. I know there is an optional support that comes with the coffee kit for it but I reckon I could make a better job of one in work.

I bought the official pot stand and feet (ripoff!). You can buy standard feet for the gas can that fits inside it from most outdoors shops for about £4. Its well worth it - when it's full it's very top heavy. (I've searched and can't find them - Chris should know).

These?: Here's an Amazon link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002OYIVEW?ie=UTF8&tag=ni-wild-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B002OYIVEW) to the official feet £17. Tiso sell the generic one (http://www.tiso.com/shop/primus/cartridge_footrest/), wee bit higher than the £4 mark.

The New Jetboil Flash PCS come with the feet for the gas canisters now, so they have learnt from customer feedback. The ignition part is smaller to protect it more and it now sports a colour changing side to show when it is hot.

I bought it for heating water quickly to make tea/coffee/hot drink when out and it is cold/wet etc. But also to have an extra burner for camp use. I like the compactness and the price wasn't bad either.

Power of Google old boy ;) (but did you notice the ni-wild affiliate link I snuck in there for you)

What the silver bit for? Ahh right it's a pot stabiliser.

so they have learnt from customer feedback.
Good to see. Top marks....hmm....perhaps not...look at the colour of it (http://www.rawoutdoors.co.uk/Images/Models/Full/3534.jpg) :O)

Edit: This add on for it made me laugh (http://www.rawoutdoors.co.uk/Models.aspx?ModelID=1750)...this happens when marketing departments brain storm....

£50 new from the Bay can't be bad.

Who was the seller, and do you know if they have any more?

Only problem is it would bring my stove count to a higher amount than I'm really comfortable with ;)

Re: coffee press, I'm nearly sure that the press from a Bodum plunger pot fits quite a few popular stove pots.  You can pick one of them up from TK Maxx or Tesco for around £5!  Mind you, when I'm in the hills I stick to instant.  As much as I love some freshly brewed coffee theres a time and a place :D

Re: Primus stove.  A lot of people have said out it is just a copy of the Jetboil, but apparently Primus used to make the burners for the original Jetboils and may have had a greater input into the stove than people think.  When Jetboil stopped using the Primus burners, Primus decided to make their own.  I definitely remember reading that some where, but I may have got some of the facts mixed up ::) It's still pretty pricey though given its only new on the market.

Love the way the two companies are copying each other...but keeping the design just slightly different to avoid trademark issues ;)

thats a brilliant extra
I hear they are releasing a cognac warming unit with built in cigar cutter next year for the more dis-concerning hill trekker ;)

(opps...seems I spent a bit long trying to figure out how to spell cognac)

Update:

Yup, the wee single serving sachets work a treat IMHO (steal them from a hotel/B&B or buy a box of 200 from amazon or your local office supply shop as I do)

That was actually a tough one to answer, Can only find one reference to the dimensions here (http://trekandtrail.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=18),     Gas content: 125g/225ml - Diameter: 90mm  - Height: 74mm - Weight: 220g

We had a night in Donard Forest where Spark spent the evening using a Jetboil to warm port or brandy or suchlike. Genius idea!

Mmm seems a tad expensive for the older jetboil, try the outdoorshop.com for the newer flash one. A few quid more, but it has the stand and includes the newer features. :)

Your pretty much spot on, If you look on the old style jetboil burner it'll say primus. Then for some reason jetboil and primus fell out and jetboil got someone else to manufacture the burners (remember when tons of them had to be recalled due to "faults" ;)) Jetboil pretty much begged primus to come back but to no avail and now we have the eta solo. I just wonder if its any better at the end of the day how many different ways are there to set gas on fire!

Added stand for gas not optional extra, redesigned ignition system more protected, heat sensitive colour changer on side to show when hot and lid now see through to view contents with drink hole. Otherwise the same setup, but I got mine for £55 plus postage RRP 70-85 depending on who is selling.

Cotswolds 80 quid for the older version sorry Chris but no sale there.

Horses for courses me thinks.

I wanted a fast water heater for drinks etc if the weather turns bad or have had a long day hiking and want something fast. Have a primus multifuel for cooking on with pots and pans etc, the flash just gives me the option to have hot on the go quickly, even if it is only a drink at a picnic, neat compact design all in one solution.

Primus Solo coming in at £80-00 or there abouts also, so I was happy with my price, but more importantly the options it now gives me.

Will let you all know how it works out after the weekend.

@ Chris what price is your gas for a jetboil ;)

I think the jet boil is "only" 60 or 70 in cotswold. Gas is between 3 and 6 quid I think depending on size but only the small one'll fit inside.

The caravan centre in Bangor has the 125g canister on sale for £3.25  well it did last month when I got one for a lantern.

@ J, liked the look of the honey stove, but as you say it is justification for spending money on it.

I have a aluminium fire box, square thing that provides a nice fire, breaks down flat for transporting and can be made into various configurations not just square.

Had it on salt island a few weekends ago, nice n warm.

The mods to the honey stove make it a great choice if I didn't already have kit. I don't think it would have done as a group fire though in Donard Wood  ;)

I've found Surf Mountain on Main St. to be as cheap as anywhere for gas canisters.  I got a 250g cart from there at £3.25 and I think the 100g are only £2.25.

Can you make me a pot stand when your at it!!!  ;)

It's just going to sit on the top of it. I dont have a small enough cutter to machine a clip.. Actually just thinking about it I could cut a clip on the band saw then machine the profile...

Only problem I can see with it is that its only able to take one size canister.

I reckoned that ill only ever be using the 125g canister, anything larger and I doubt ill need the stand as the base should be wide enough to provide good stability.

Good point, Although don't forget that with the increased capicitcy canisters the height of the unit increases also. There's probably a formula but that increased height may negate the effect of the bigger base and your back at square one with a wobbly stove ;)
