Title: lidl - heads up
Post by: DryBag on April 22, 2010
next thursday they're selling 1kg tents for a tenner
http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home_ni.nsf/pages/c.o.20100429.p.1kg_Mini_Tent

the design looks remarkably similar to the Robens Summer Wind:
so it might be possible to hang it from a tree or pitch it with walking poles, reducing the weight even further

but the hydrostatic head is 1500 instead of Robens' 5000!  That said, I've never tried pitching a tent a metre and a half under water, so 1500 should be OK.

Not a bad price, are they only in bright colours or is there any green/subdued tones?

you could buy a big tub of tent reproofer (Nikwax I think its called) and boost the h. head yourself. At a tenner your still onto a winner even if the nikwax costs a tenner! I like the idea of being able to pitch it with walking poles, You could prob switch the guy lines with Dynema and add a couple more at no extra weight.

Wow - good spot!  As my finances this year are ruling out a Henry Shires, this will do nicely.  Will be great for the mountain marathon in Sept.

I wonder if the low hydrostatic head means it's also quite breathable?

I'm going to scout my nearest Lidl, so I can make a surgical strike next Thurs  8)

How many've you got Jonno?

I have a Vango Banshee 300, Vango Juno 300 Teepee, a Pro Action Hike Lite solo and a Gelert solo. (Plus an Argos teepee that turned out to be pants and a couple'o'tarps.

And a hammock.

All absolutely essential I might add!

Vango - are they good?  Everybody seems to sell them - I've only two tents (not including the hammock and tarp) and I need - absolutely need - a third for this summer. (actually fourth if you include the Lidl one that's in this thread).

I'm looking at the Vango Orchy 400 or the Vango Tigris 400 - but I also like the look of the Sunncamp Evolution 400DL.

anybody got any advice?

sorry, we've drifted a bit from the original topic - but since I'm the OP I'll allow it ;)

Vango are a well established name in the tent market. They pretty much cemented their credibility with the orignal "force 10" (the bright orange thing the scouts always used!) It was over-enginnered and heavy, but was literally hurricane proof. Theres tons of tales of people pitching their force 10 in some camp site only to wake up in the morning and find that caravans have blown away in the night due to the gales! (on a side note I still have my dads old force 10, its close on 30years old, if not more, and still going strong!)
They seem to have deviated a little from just tents these days and make a host of stuf but in my opion you can't do much better than a vango for price to equipment ratio.

I'd agree about Vango. The Force 10s are world famous and the rest of their tents tend to be reasonably priced but of good quality.

I was in Lidl this evening in Dundonald and no tents... No camping gear at all. However, if you want an arc welder for £50 you're well in luck.

Looking at the flyer that came through the door I notice that from next Monday the have "luggage straps" (bungees to me and thee) at 3 quid odd a set.  Handy if you're of the tarp-y persuasion.

Put a little overview of this tent in a new topic.
