Title: Need to buy some climbing gear.. advice needed
Post by: Are we there yet? on December 15, 2011
Hi all...
Im looking into buying some new climbing gear...  Jackson Sports have an offer at the moment which includes
Viper Harness, Belay master Krab, Bug Belay Device, Chalk bag and chalk ball for £70...  if shoes are included its £110.
http://www.jackson-sports.com/Kits.aspx?ModelID=7594

I have no experience in deciding what is good or not, as ive only ever hired the equipment.  Im used to wearing Red Chilli shoes and have only climbed indoors but hope to be outdoor climbing soon...

Any thoughts on this offer or anything else appreciated  :)

Bit of a novice myself at the old climbing lark, but it's something i would spend more money on to get the Satisfaction in knowing what's securing you is quality gear, best to get an experienced climber to help you pick it.Here's a youtube video about some gear.

That DMM stuff is top quality, there's no issue with it. They are a pro company!
The shoes will be a little cheaper, but they look comfortable and should be durable (which is good if you are indoor climbing as the walls wear them faster than rock!). They look like they have been designed for use by climbing centres. You will pay twice that to get any better shoes outside of a sale.
The harness is a lot better than some of the other entry harnesses like the Clog, and the belay master karabiner is awesome. It really is a great package, you will be very hard pushed to find a better starter kit!

Probably would have got it myself except I worked for Tiso and got good discount on particular things I wanted.

I have to agree that DMM are a pro company, they gear in the pack is all safe. Best advise I could give would be go to the shop and try it on.

Hey AnnieAnne, i bought the same kit out of jacksons. The harness has 5gear loops and the leg and waist straps are the sort that don't need to be doubled back on themselves. Just pull them tight and you're ready to go. The shoes seem to be good too but it's the first pair of rock shoes i've had so i can't compare. I think it's a great kit  :)

No i got the size normally wear. They are a close fit but could be closer i think. When i got them i was thinking more of comfort because i was only starting out. in future i think i'll be going for a half a size or even a full size smaller because if your feet are crammed in tight you get better support on the wall.

If the shoes are un-lined they can stretch a full size once broken in, lined leather won't really stretch. Best to try on or ask advice of the shop.

Took a wee trip up to Belfast and bought the package...  just happened to check Facebook before I left and saw the Red Chilli shoes had been reduced  in price...  They swapped the DMM shoes for the Red Chilli's no problem.  ;D Cant wait to try it all out!
