I went for a walk in the Mournes on 2nd January and was treated to seeing the Brocken spectre. There were clear skies but a thin layer of cloud was wrapped around some of the summits. For those who are unfamiliar, this is an optical phenomena where my shadow was projected on the cloud below and diffraction caused a circular rainbow to be visible around my head. It was clearly visible from the summit of Cove and also on Slieve Beg, although not as well defined.
Worth getting out of bed early for!

Thanks Fred.

Nice one!

Fantastic Fred, I'd never even heard of that. Did you get any photos?

I have only seen the spectre a couple of times before when abroad but this is the first time in the mournes. Unfortunately I had no camera with me.
My shadow had devil horns but that's another story!

Now Fred, if only you had a phone with you, we'd be looking at a cool picture now ;)

Most phone users would be too busy texting to even notice the spectre!

Ha, you're probably right. I did have to tell a friend to turn off a rugby match he was watching on his phone once.
