Boy is recovering after 60ft fall

A nine-year-old boy is recovering after he was rescued after falling 60 feet down the side of a cliff on Cave Hill in north Belfast.

The boy was treated for a minor head injury at the scene by paramedics.

A police helicopter found the boy and specialist rescue teams and two fire crews also attended the accident, which happened at about 1530 BST on Monday.

The child, who had been out walking with his father, was given emergency treatment at nearby Belfast Zoo.

Gary Richardson, from the ambulance service, said the boy was lucky to escape without serious injury.

"He has been taken to hospital for treatment and is in a stable condition at the moment," he said.

"He was quite lucky really, he lost his footing and apparently rolled at the same time and he did sustain injuries, but fortunately they weren't life-threatening."

Mr Richardson praised the boy's father for his actions after the accident happened.

"His dad was extremely good. He was very calm, he was able to give us a location to try and direct in and was able to wave at the helicopter.

"The other thing his dad was he was very clued in about things - he was had a high-visibility jacket with him.

"That's the sort of thing people walking on the Cave Hill really need to think about, because his dad was definitely ready for an accident just in case it happened."

Good to here the kid is ok and the dad was clued, great job.
