Water at the Bog of Donard
« on: June 17, 2010 »

Strangely, one of the few places in the Mournes I've never walked is up the Bloody Bridge route to Donard. I'll be there on Friday night with MG1 - anyone know whether there's any water close by to the Bog of Donard. Looks like the Bloody Bridge River begins up around there. Also if there is a river starting up around there what's it likely to be like after this warm weather.

For paranoia I would fill up your bottles at the quarry (Crannoge), most of the water that feeds the Bloody Bridge River seems to come from the Bog of Donard.

I've crossed the Bog of Donard area heading for Chimney Rock but not noticed a river as such....more a seriously boggy area (went up the my thigh in shuck once....thought my wife was going to have a heart attack from the laughing   ;D )

I'm thinking of being able to walk back down to get water once we're pitched. The Crannoge isn't far - that'll do nicely.
(Though you'll only be a few feet away. Maybe I'll come drink yours ;))

Yea, it's less then a mile to Crannoge, but the feeder river is fast flowing sooner than that, could cut the water walk down a bit more....

....you'll only be a few feet away....
may want to check your map ;) , I'm seeing it as 1.2miles between our checkpoints.

And if we need to do a water refill during the iWait we've got to drop down to where the the Glen River crosses the path, looks like a 200m climb back up again...don't fancy that. I'll go all Lord of the Flies on you if you tried to steal our water  ;D

The best place to get your water from there would be just before the quarry. I walk up that route 4 weeks ago on that really hot sunday. the bog near the wall was solid.
