So you've sat around an open fire, maybe toasted a few marshmallows or pushed the boat out and cooked a steak on the campfire? Well if you think that's outdoor eating then you're in for a surprise when you get yourself to a Christmas Camp.

A full turkey dinner with all the fixings, washed down with hot mulled wine followed by a variety of desserts and all accompanied by the pulling of crackers under trees festooned with fairy lights and in-front of a roaring fire - that's how you eat outdoors!
There's been a Christmas dinner in the Mournes every year since 2010 which each time has without exception been the highlight of the outdoor year. Everyone brings a part of the feast, complex foods are prepared at home for heating over the fire, simpler foods are cooked up there. We all scurry around a huge campfire organising our own portion of the meal which is then served to all who have joined us. When the main course is done we tuck into Xmas pudding, mince pies and anything else that thoughtful people have brought and we have a merry old evening by the fire listening to festive tunes and giggling into the night before retiring to tents and bivvies for a relaxing nights sleep.

If you haven't tried it then you haven't lived - join us and you'll be sitting at the table on Christmas Day looking at the turkey and remembering how much better a Christmas Dinner tastes when you're eating it round an open fire with like minded friends.

There's plenty of room to camp but if you want to come for the meal and head home after that's fine too.
As usual, all suggestions welcomed!

Reply to the post to be added to the list and remember to say what you'll be bringing for the meal
Please remember we NEED FOOD so try and put your name down for food before other items
Also, if you're intending to come or on the fence, please have your name added as at least tentative so we can account for potential numbers. Is better to have too much than too little.

PM me with any issues!

Sign me up too, I would look at bringing the X mas pud and custard.  Also if anyone is on the way from Millisle to Newcastle and wants a lift, let me know, I would be there for the night.

Don't think I can make it that night either, is the date set in stone? As it seems a fair few cant make that date?
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS DINNER AND CAMP 2016
Post by: Glenn B on November 14, 2016
Well up until the weekend past any Saturday in December suited me, I sort of thought with CRIMBO being a busy time with work dinners and such the earlier in the month the better but if it would suit more people to have it on another date then we'll go with that. Unfortunately for me though the 3Rd is now the only free Saturday I have.
If everyone can throw in their dates we'll take it from there.

I'm confirmed for the 3rd but unfortunately, I can't do any other dates, this year is just a balls for free time. Stick me down for the mash!

However, if a date other than the 3rd suits better then feel free to switch it, I'm happy to sit this one out if needs be.

Unfortunately I made my plans for the first week of December two weeks ago, so I hope to get the chance to join you next time.
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS DINNER AND CAMP 2016

It seems a shame that so many folks can't make it to the Xmas camp this year because of the date. It's the hi-lite of the camping year and we should be trying to get as many peeps as possible to show up. Could we put up a Poll, with the dates through December, the 3rd, the 10th and the 17th and we can have a vote as to what date actually suits every-one. We've done this previously for a few of the Xmas camps and it worked brilliantly. That sound alright to everyone?
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS DINNER AND CAMP 2016
Post by: seanbranagh on November 16, 2016
As one of the people who unfortunately cannot make the 3rd I would definitely like the idea of a poll  :)
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS DINNER AND CAMP 2016
Post by: Glenn B on November 16, 2016
Hey folks a poll has been started for preferable dates for this, so get your votes in  ;D ;D

Title: Re: CHRISTMAS DINNER AND CAMP 2016
Post by: Dowser on November 16, 2016
The 3rd works best for me this year... and I would hate to miss another one.  I'm still getting over the FOMO from last year when I had to abstain due to the arrival of Amirah.

I'll wait and see what date is settled upon before claiming a food item.

Unfortunately the 3rd would be the only date that suits me this year, even that was a pain in the arse to get freed up.

Post by: Matthew on November 16, 2016
Count me in for this one. Again the 3rd is really the only date that suits me too as I have a work dinner on the 9th and, in all likelihood, will be unable to drive on the to make the 10th.

Hmm would have liked one of those polls where you can vote for any options that suit you. At least then I could confirm my availability without harming anyone else by expressing one preference.   Might abstain  ???  The very fact that the dates are being duscussed is testament to how much we all want to attend and that's a credit to everyone who has made it such a success in the past.
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS DINNER AND CAMP 2016

I would suggest just to make 2 Christmas dinners, this way every one or at least most of the people will be able to attend to one of the dates.  :)

Guys it seems like i should have set the poll up so people could vote for dates that they are available and not the date that you prefer.  with this in mind it looks like there could be more interest in having this changed to the 10th as it might suit a larger number of people.  My apologies for making a bit of a tit of this, i tried.

I'm still gonna head up on the 3rd as ive already got my pass out for the evening and it would be a shame to waste it.

ATB Glenn.

I'll see you on the third. I must admit that the jovial spirit that the Christmas camp brings is, in part, during to the large numbers that attend say, in comparison to camps throughout the year. I can't help but feel that this will be somewhat lacking this year with the notion of two Christmas camps.

Hi Glenn,
Lol, I feel for you mate, your head must be frazzled with all this back and forth regarding the dates.

Well done on trying to get this fantastic night organised, shame it's not a bit easier eh.  ::)

Just to give you a heads up that I'm going to remove my vote for the 10th December, id voted that date just because I know how good the camp is and look forward to it every year, and then on the other hand I've been fortunate to have been able to attend so many camps over the last number of years, I'm bound to miss the odd one.

Ahhh good hangovers, good times!!!!

I'd like to suggest the camp goes ahead on the third, it's never going to suit everybody, and those of us that cant make it this time, well we're going to be praying it's a night of torrential rain lol.

I still have the grills for the fire pit, if Whorya is going il meet up with him and he can bring these along.

Have a good one .RB.

Hello campers.  I'm looking forward to it.  Weather looks better than it did a few days before last year's outing, thank goodness.

Anyone got one of those flamethrower stoves that we can get going on the mulled wine with?  I have some Primus power fuel that could go in it if that's possible?

Also I'm sure if there are some others that are keen to go you'll easily be accommodated.  Don't let the lack of necessary food items put you off, there are plenty of goodies that would go down well at camp  8)

I picked up a box of red so that'll be a good starter.

I'd previously mentioned about bringing up the grills and someone giving me a hand.  Looking back on previous pictures they don't seem just as big as I remember them.  I'll lash the two together and I'll be grand with them.

Any thoughts about what time we should plan to eat?  I think that it was around 7pm last year, maybe a wee bit later by the time we got the fire going rightly.  I'll hopefully be up some time between 4:30 and 5.  Looking forward to it people  :)

Just a wee heads up for anyone who hasn't parked up at Carrick Plant before, the Barking doberman is actually really friendly so don't panic and as for paying for parking call at the house and if nobody is about they usually leave a tin to chuck your money in.

Another fantastic Christmas camp guys it's brilliant how it all just comes together around that big roaring fire with everyone offering up their part of the feast. Was great to meet up again with everyone although when I eventually woke this morning I thought it had all been a dream. There was no one there lol I do like my lie ins. I'll try and get a few photies up later there won't be many as my wee camera was playing up, or maybe it's just most of the time I had a drink in each hand :D :D

I had a really good time, cheers lads, the food was tasty and the banter was great. The weather was so mild, I slept like a baby  :) Looking forward to another camp already.
Nice video Yak, going to post some photos later if I get the chance.
Oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TORP!!

Thanks for a wonderful camp everyone. The dinner was outstanding. Weather was great and the fire got going so well it was hard to sit beside.   Such a calm night gave a great nights rest, well apart from No Time For Anything!  Glad to hear you got a bit of tlc at home.

Looking forward to seeing all the pics. I didn't really take many since I can't quite work out how to take them in that kind of light without them looking naff.

It was good to put a few faces to names. Hope to see you all out and about soon.
