Heading for a quick Friday night camp in the Mournes on 15th Jan. Not sure of the specifics yet but probably down after work, camp somewhere around the Trassey area, then back home Saturday morning.
Everyone's welcome.

Good stuff. We'll be going unless the weather turns really bad I'd expect.
Weather is seriously cold but dry at the moment. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

After watching this GIF for an entire lunch time I feel I should really go, I'm in!
Might be an early start for me on Saturday morning though, what times does the sun rise :o
-
Hmm, sunrise? Think it's about 10am, maybe 1030 :P

I'll be intending to be there at 745/8ish or so this evening. Anyone who wants updates and doesn't have my mobile PM me.
We'll have walkie talkies on channel 6 if anyone uses one, if anyone is hiking over and wants us to keep an ear on your arrival text me when you're setting out or else we'll assume you're tucked up warm in front of Corrie 8)
I've PM'd everyone a rough spot but it will need to be flexible, we'll stay as close as we can.
There are weather warnings in place for cold, the forecast is to be clear, it's going to be brass monkeys out there 8)
-
please post a photo or two when you are done!
-
Definitely, don't hold back on the photos! You are using walkie talkies? That's a pretty good idea. Are there many that use them in the Mournes?
-
Well that was a cold one, but the fire and some tellytubbby suits kept us nice and warm ;D

That was some fire last night 8)

Looks like a good time was had, a bit confused about where you found a warm building with a handy sleeping shelf on the Mourne Mountains, but I'm sure explanations will follow. Thanks for posting the pics!

Nice one lads have you any idea what the temperature got down too 8)

We had a great night. A beautiful clear sky full of stars. Little wind so the smoke from the fire went straight up. It didn't reach the low temperatures I expected and the thermal layers I brought stayed in the rucksack. The fire and lack of wind chill helped with that. I recorded a better nights' sleep than many's a time up the hills, if a bit of a late one.
We had a mix of bivvyers, tenters and even a 'hard top' option as you saw in the photo.
Great craic lads, cheers.

The nearby weather station at Katesbridge reported an overnight air min of -3.9 and a grass/bivvy level minimum of -6.5 :o but without the wind it was bearable, well it was for those of us in "tents", not sure if the bivviers have thawed out yet ;D

That is my deluxe ::) camper van conversion, this is only version 1, quickly assembled yesterday morning. Its a freestanding bunk bed type device that I can slide in and out of the van as required (if I put it outside would that count as a bivvy ??? ). A few modifications are required though, like that plank in the middle making it very tricky to get out of >:( .
-
Will need a wider angle photo, I though it was indoors. Good luck with your build - it's looking good.
-
I must say that I had a great night and I hope to see you all in future camps. I had an enjoyable walk out along trassey track, brandy pad, glen river track to Newcastle. Unfortunately it was raining by the time I got to the glen river.
Regarding snow conditions, Hares gap was devoid of snow although there was a lot of ice about. The higher tops had a good coverage of snow and it seemed to be better towards the coastal side. Donard and its neighbours were well covered down to the level of the col. Predictably the steps above the glen river were very icy but this wasn't stopping large numbers of day trippers making the ascent of Donard. Perhaps they were going up to get a good phone signal ;)

That was a great night guys. Bit of a late one - by the time I hit Saturday evening I couldn't keep my eyes open. Still, a steak and bit of chat round the fire was just what the doctor ordered to start the year. It was a shame we never saw the snow we were hoping for so after everyone dispersed on Saturday I found myself with a bit of spare time on my hands so I hiked up to the wall to see what the snow was like there. There was some but not a huge amount, still, was a lovely day for a wander even if I did have to carry all my overnight gear.
