My first spoon
« on: December 10, 2009 »

Hi all, was out the other night walking my dog and came across a dead tree stump, seen a nice bit sticking out the side so ripped my laplander out and got the bad boy. Havent a clue what type of wood it is tho its a fir, spruce, pine of some sort maybe someone can id it for me. Anyhow i had my first attempt at carving a simple spoon, using just my axe, laplander and mora, harder than i thought but very relaxing and methodical it kicks ass carving down through the different layers of the tree, Not sure if my method is anywhere near how you should approach carving a spoon but i just played it by ear stopping every now and again to check my next stroke of the knife.... heres some pics

Stripping the bark which came away clean

Just after splitting the wood with the small forest axe

Starting to hollow out the mouthpiece part of the spoon

Cheated a bit making a line round a spoon to help guide me

Putting a stopper cut in to split of the excess with my mora

After a lot of carving the spoon is starting to take shape

Shitloads more carving and a bit of sanding this is as far as i've got it needs a final sand then oiled

Sorry the quality of the pics is crap (phone). Not sure how i would manage in the woods without a vice but im sure i could make something up.

Regards,

Dave

With each telling, the cut gets bigger, deeper, the distance walked is now about 7 miles and the number if stitches goes up. I think I have about 358 stitches in at the minute.

Got the stitches out yesterday Bill. Accidents can still happen, even when you are being careful.
