hey everyone, new to the forum!
« on: July 15, 2011 »

hello, names Eoghan, and have done a little walking in the mournes before for duke of edinburgh.

Only a young'un but me and the mate are going to take on a 'first time' hike starting this weekend, and finishing later on in the week, starting at Donard park and ending at Knockchree all being well.

Shouldn't be too taxing considering the amount of walking some people do in one day, and we'd be considerably fit, but should be fun to say the least.

here's a taster of our 'rough' route... enjoy..

Alrite Eoghan, you should try and tackle that walk in one day, and if you start to bleed from out of your ears dont worry, thats normal, isnt it? lol

Hi Eoghan, welcome to the forum.  You've good options for camping on your second night, with a nice flat pitch beside the water at the head of Loughshannagh or on the summit of Doan.  Personally I'd go for the summit of Doan, it's got a superb pitch for a couple of tents.  Make sure you let us know how you get on (with lots of photos!) :)

Thanks for all the good wishes, plenty of pics will be to follow! I spoke to a more experienced walker on the phone today, and he said that although there are great places to camp around Lough Shannagh, he thought the second days walking was pretty short, especially if we are up early and starting out early.

I then changed the route a bit, and I think we're going to camp around blue lough for the second night (Nice valley views and sights) and continue on down the 'road' to the right of silent valley, with the destination for night three being Crocknafeola Woods, then continue down the back of the woods on the track, and follow the road down to Knockchree. I've heard on a good day the view from Knockchree is nice, stretching as far as Dundrum bay area, and the other direction towards Carlingford Lough. Don't know how true that is, but we'll hopefully be lucky enough to see! :)

Alrite Eoghan, you should try and tackle that walk in one day, and if you start to bleed from out of your ears dont worry, thats normal, isnt it? lol

In all honesty, having walked around 7 or 8 of the 'twelve pins' (known as the Glencaughan horse shoe) in Galway a few years ago, only to be stopped by injury, i say i could tackle that in two days maybe, haha.. the bleeding from the ears sounds great, maybe one day i'll be that good at walking :D haha
