Book on the history of the Mourne Wall
« on: July 21, 2010 »

Like the title says, I am looking for the names of any publications about the history of the Mourne Wall (or the Mourne Mountains) & where to buy if you know.

If anyone has a book I would like to hear what they think of it too.

I hope this is in the correct section.

There may be quiet a few books about the Mournes however one that I got is:-

"The Mourne Walks" by Paddy Dillon cost £8.

http://www.paddydillon.co.uk/guidebook/the-mournes-walks/

Brief history of the Mournes with 32 walks described in detail with a map, how to get there, the route, what you will or might see on the way plus othe rsnippets of information..  I have found it useful.

The ISBN number is 978-1-84717-141-2 published by The O'Brien Press ltd.

You should be able to pick it up in shops like Cotswold, Tiso, Easons and similar shops.

Happy reading.

I'm pretty fascinated by the Mourne Wall too - it's quite a feat of effort to have built it. If someone found a book I'd buy it too. The Paddy Dillon book does have plenty of information in it but not much detail about the wall its-self.
Some of the NI-Wild guys have walked it so they could give you a blow by blow painful recount of it :)

Here's a few discussions on the Binnian Tunnel which is also pretty fascinating.

Thanks to both of you for the info.
Sounds like what I am after.

It would just be nice to know a bit more of the history of areas as you walk throught them.

I will have a look at this on Saturday....

My dad has a book on the building of the Silent Valley Reservoir.  It's a very old book but if I'm not mistaken it has information on the Mourne Wall as well.  I will take a look for it when I go home and post some more details.

Going back a few years much of my family were from Bryansford and involved in the construction of the reservoir so its something I've always had an interest in as well.

I ordered the Mountains of Mourne one. Looks good.

There's quite a good website about it here:

There is a very, very good chance that this is the book my dad has.  Didn't get a chance to check last night, but now I know its worth £150 I have new found inspiration to look it out ;)  Will see if I can find out a bit more tonight and post up the info!
