Magilly Cuddy Reeks
« on: December 17, 2011 »

Would anyone be up for a little weekend road trip? Thinking spring/summer 2012. I attempted the Magilly Cuddy Reeks back in school but despite my best arguments the navigator went the wrong way and we hadnt time to complete the walk. I've just bought the map on Amazon and really want to complete this walk. So give me your ideas here, Lets make this happen.
Chris.

Which walk in particular were you wanting to do,was it the hourse-shoe,Carrauntoohil,Beenkeragh,Caher,did this earlier this year, such a fantastic range.

On the Beenkeragh ridge eariler this year. With major improvements to the southern road system it's about a five hour journey from Downpatrick, with good road's the whole way.I'am planing a winter ascent of Carrauntoohil in mid Janurary, but this will not include the Beenkeragh ridge as in even in summer this can be quite dangerous, for me it will be Caher/hyro track -Carrauntoohil returning the same way.You could always consider using a guide,i can highly recommend http://www.kerryclimbing.ie/,these guys are very experienced climbers with tons of local knowledge, they have guided walks throught-out the year

Mountain Goat doing what he does best, here a very good youtube link covering the horse shoe trek

looking forward to doing this in the new year

Are we there yet?

Thank you very much for your reply Mourneman. It was indeed the horseshoe I was looking to do. Also very much though of doing it for a long weekend, enjoy my time down there. Long way to travel.  Trying to talk a few non walkers into the trip down too, maybe get a night out while there. I would advise anyone to watch the video. I'm looking forward to finishing this now.

No problems Craigy123,you're more than welcome to join me on the winter ascent, which will probably be around the end of January.

Route planned for a winter ascent would be via Caher, returning the same way

Winter ascent= excuse for new gear...I like it. My plan this year is do more walking in new places. I've been all over the glens and mornes. Would love to give the winter ascent a blast, thanks for the invite and keep me posted. I'm a friend of the ni wild facebook page. Christopher Craig.

Hi Craig123, The Coomloughra Horseshoe is brilliant. A few of us did it in 10hrs last July (2011) but we wouldn't be as fit as some of you guys on this forum. I have done it previously in 8 hours.. Here are pictures of my trip up Carrantouhill:

Not too sure if I would do it in winter though. I agree with Mourneman...

Enjoy....

Thanks for the link to your album, looks like you got a fantastic day. The day we went it was wet from start to finish, and I packed my bag up north after a coming home from a serious night on the tiles and forgot most of what I should have brought. Gotta do it again. Unfinished business!
