Hello from Germany
« on: March 11, 2012 »

Hey folks,

my name is Bastian. I'm an outdoor enthusiast from Germany, who is very keen to hike one or two parts of the Ulster Way this summer, most likely in the beginning of August. Which parts of the Ulster Way would you recommend? Well, I was planning to walk the Mourne Way and Lecale Way within 8 days. Good choice? Btw, how is the situation with responsible ("leave no trace") wild camping along the Ulster Way? Is it tolerated or will I get much trouble with farmers, landlords or hunters? I don't want to brake your rules or abuse your hospitality. I'd like to be a regardful tourist but I love the freedom of wild camping.  ;D

Thanks so much for all information! ;)

Cheers,

Bastian

PS: If you need some information about travelling or outdoor activities in Germany, please feel free to ask me!

Bastian - Welcome to NI-Wild :-)
The mournes are lovely ... but as I live on the north coast I can highly recommend a walk on the causeway and if you are here in August you could come up and join us here http://sperrinswalkingfestival.com/default.aspx for a walk in the "other" hills in Northern Ireland

Welcome Bastian, NI wild getting an international flavour I like it! I am local to the lecale way and have walked most of it at one time or another and would highly recommend it! Should be alright to camp along most of it, just pitch late, leave early and "leave no trace" and you will be fine!

Willkommen Bastian,
I must say, your English grammar and spelling is fantastic. It is better than most of the native english speakers on this site.  :)

Welcome!
The Mourne Way is good but doesn't necessarily take you through the best bits of the range. The Lecale way has some dramatic scenery but also involves a lot of road walking. As Domino said, the North Coast is excellent, lots to see up there and if you want a few days around the Mournes, why not see if a group from NI-Wild fancies a few days showing you around!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! That's great.

Well, Northern Ireland seems to be the right place to "go wild" and get in touch with friendly people.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far! I guess I will go for a hike in the Mournes and a further one along the coast. Lecale Way, Antrim Hills Way or Causeway Coast Way? I can't really decide.  ;D Maybe, I just book my flights and decide later which path I take.

Do you think the Causeway Coast Way will be open again in August? I've read that some sections are closed because of landslides. Is wild camping along the Causeway Coast Way possible? I could imagine that it's a bit too busy up there with seaside tourists or am I wrong? Shouldn't be a big issue because I've already discovered youth hostels along the way.

Well, I'm not only here to squeeze some information out of the forum. In the beginning of May I'll go hiking on the island of Mallorca. Maybe, I'll go on a hike in Germany at Eastern as well. If you are interested, I can write reports about the trips and post some images here. Maybe you are interested how "ze Germans" do their hikes.  ;D

Cheers,

Bastian

Wilkommen dude!

Ah Paul, that's disappointing I thought you'd have known the German equivalent of "dude" ;)

I walked a bit of the Causeway Coast on Saturday.  I didn't get as far as were the landslides are.  Also, you can't get along the cliff above the main causeway stones directly from the main car park, because of the construction work going on.  That said the work may be finshed by August and besides that I'd recommend that a visitor should go to actually see the stones then head up the shepherd steps anyway.  There is still loads of cliff-top walking after that section.
