Got to drop angela off at work at 8am then be back to pick her up at 5pm. so gives me about 6 hours. Hen might be best.

You drive past Europa on your way to work? Would it be easiest to pick me up on the way and continue on down to the Mournes?

I'm pretty flexible for what time I can be there at

Central: 0721     0745     0806     0836
Europa: 0702     0730     0815        0830

Or anywhere in town, just factor in walking time.

Had great fun today on Hen Mountain with Oisin. The weather was good and sunny, but was very very windy. We set off and walked up the boggy land and got to the Summit Tor we had a wonder round to get our bearings. I took the lead on the first route up Yak Yak. After which we headed out the wind for a bit to eat then took a look at Volcano on the South East Tor. I started it but could not finish and  had a nervous down climb (Next time it will be mine). We came down and took a drive round to Newcastle so Oisin could have a look at the Rockpool. Looking forward to the next day out.

I think that has to be one of, if not thee most difficult bouldering problems I have ever encountered. The sheer grip, forearm and core muscle strength required to be able to make it look so easy was tremendously high.

I have set the bar high and expect others to follow with me.

Don't try it without the guidance of a trained professional.

If the wind chill was anything like the recent camp your brave men, my hands really hurt when I didn't have gloves on.

I did Yak-yak without any gloves. It was cold and I scratched the back of my hand but I loved the feel of the rock, also loved getting my gloves back on lol

Not bad guys, do you have any photos of the actual climb itself or even a little video of the ascent? Did you use ropes or was it more like bouldering?

Cant really take photos on the rock face as your either climbing or belaying. Oisin took some short video not sure how it came out.

Yeah, a third person there would have meant recording video footage would have been easier.

My camera fell and the lens cracked, so it will be a short, heart broken video, I'll get it up on Friday evening.

Looked like a great day from the pictures. Hard luck regarding your camera Oisin.

Anyone tried abseiling hen mountain before?

Lenny abseiled down our route, he couldn't get to the bottom, the anchor points on top were too far away from the drop off point, and this made the route longer than the rope.

As Oisin said you can Abseil but its all about the length of your rope, how far you anchors are from the edge.

To be Honesy Abseiling is more used to get off a rock after a climb more than as a sport.

Can you not tie the rope safely through the belay device the way you showed us at the Ozone and then take photos like the ones you took of Typo and myself.

That's sad news about the camera Oisin, such are the perils of climbing.

Out of interest, what height is Yak-Yak and what's the rating for it?

Yak-Yak 27m   D
Start - the first prominent groove line is taken by Simplicity; Yak-Yak starts 3m to the left of this groove. Climb straight up the slabs to finish with a mantelshelf onto the top.

Right, that gives it some perspective, the Ozone wall is 15m so it's nearly double that. Good going, especially in the cold.  :)

disaster  :(  wee tip for the new camera, when climbing i put a sling over my head and under 1 arm, then put a small clip on it which i clip the camera to so if i drop it (which i often do) it doesn't hit the deck  :)  it also allows easy movement of the camera so i can put it safely away in my breast pocket.

Thanks for the tip Liam, unfortunately its not a traditional camera, and doesn't have a camera strap. It should have been in it's protective housing, but I lost a vital piece for it when hiking in the snow a couple of weeks back. So it was a series of unfortunate events.

On the other hand, here is a few very delayed photos of our trip.

Great photos Oisin, i like the fish-eye lens feel of them, looks action-y. :)

Also in regards to your assignment, in the seventh photo down, to Lennys left you can see the farmers fields in a grid system.

I've emailed the manufacturer, no reply as of yet. I guess the "We will get back to you within 24hrs!" is more of a guideline and not a guarantee. I'd like to think they'll do something about it though, it was no fault of mine.

Anyway, here is another late arrival, just a wee video of the day out. No climbing footage unfortunately, if the camera housing had of been working properly I could have video'd me and Lenny climbing it thanks to the head mount. The video is nothing amazing, amateur at best, but sure it will give you a wee sense of how windy it was (I'm in the process of finding a way to capture decent audio).

Excuse the lack of embedding in the thread, I'm not sure if there is a way to do it with Vimeo?
