Was out hiking Yellow water area in the Mournes,When i sat down on large rock to eat .Something caught my eye hidden in a cleft covered with piece of wood,it was a box rapped in black cloth,Took quick look around my heart beating faster it was hidden by someone why? was it money? jewels?..Or perhaps something sinester? Opened it up a Smurf keyring, coins,a lighter, chewing gum and note book. Thus was my accidentel intraduction to geochaching,Nearly gave me a heart attack :)

Congrats on your find ;D
However, it shouldn't have chewing gum or a lighter in it :-\
Food will attract animals and lighters are not for kids. Especially in the Mournes ::)

It was just of trail between Yellow water carpark and letrim lodge carpark, lighter didnt work

What is the craic with putting stuff in the boxes, do they have any meaning?

Not really. When the cache owner puts it out he/she may have filled with goodies relevant to the area, etc. I found one near a known fossil location and it had a few actual fossils in it; very cool.
Generally you'd put in what you want to find or in my case what the kids want to find. When I did my cache I filled it full of paracord bits and pieces. Everything was made by me and hopefully others will enjoy ;D

Some people put crap in like McD's toys or a 2p ::) Although my kids are still happy enough with that. When they get bored with their 'treasure' I scoop it up and we'll use it as swaps :) [Not the rubbish though]
Some folks have unique swaps e.g. a guitar pick with username on it or other items with their name and / or a message on it.
If you have kids and enjoy the outdoors it's definitely worth a try. For me I always wanted a handheld GPS [gadget freak ::)] but could never justify one. Then I discovered Geocaching ;D

They are well cool.. Can you make me one in pink lol??
So if you find a cache, do you take an item out and leave one in it's place?
Bought myself a GPS but have never used it.. Maybe it could find some use with geocaching.. Mmm
-
That's pretty much the only main rule; if you take something out then leave something in of greater or equal value :)
Some caches are huge with loads of stuff while others only have enough space for a bit of paper to sign your name :o
All caches will have a logbook as well for you sign your name. Once you get home you can log your visit on the website.
I think I have pink, I can check when I get home. Are you after a paracord man?
-
Yes please!!! I am worse than a wain..
Also do you make them yourself? Just thinking it might be a fun thing to do with the kids whilst round a camp fire, or when teaching camp craft.

Cool; I'll get onto some man knitting tonight then ;D

Awesome! ;D
