Sit on top nomad kayak
« on: July 20, 2011 »

Hi, thinking on buying the nomad kayak for some quiet river kayaking and also some paddling close to coast on calm day. Anyone know if nomad would be ok for this. I plan on solo kayaking as don't know anyone who does it where I live in limavady. I hope to buy tomorrow and paddle some lower bann if it's dry.

Hi Graham, its been a long time since ive done any of that but it would be good crack especially around some of the caves on the coast, i saw it on the web and it seems to get good reviews so go for it, xtreme boat sales in coleraine have a wee offer on them.

No worries man, there is a great beach to learn on in Dunfanaghy, donegal, it may be a bit of a drive but the beach goes on for ages into the sea without any sudden drops or strong currents. Its also got pubs!

If you are thinking of buying a sit on top I would advise you to do one of the awareness courses with CANI.
They run throughout the province and cover quite a lot including safety and rescue.

i missed the sot awareness course too, must keep eye out for any similar courses.
I bought mine last thursday and tried it out at the marina at the loughan near Coleraine.  Then did 3 days at downings in Co Donegal, it was beautiful weather.  Practiced my self rescue technique of scrambling on top and swining legs over without capsizing again.  And paddled round some of the coast.  I've got the bug for paddling now !!  Pity work gets in the way.
This evening im for enagh lough to practice some more, who cares if it rains!!!!

Limavady's close enough to Coleraine that you should hook up with the causeway coast kayaking association.

aye and dont forget your personal flotation device, vhf radio and calling the coast guard with a paddleplan if your thinking of taking it in the sea.

check out our website at www.kayakanglingireland.com for advice on sit on tops. you might hook up with someone local and its always better to paddle with someone else untill your experienced enough.

also, dont piss around with the tides or you,ll just get into trouble.

enjoy.
