Can anyone recommend software (preferably free) for stitching images together to make a panorama?

FFS, I've been doing it manually in CS3. How do you do it automatically and can it deal with overlaps?

Yeah it cuts the pics for best fit. Drag all the photos for your pano into photoshop then file:> automate:> photomerge.

It'll ask some stuff, click use open files, I usually use perspective I think, then it'll merge everything and give you your pano.
You'll need to crop the edges to square it up but its easy done.

For anyone without CS3 have a try with this app: AutoStitch it's "free as in beer" (example I did a while past..using a camera phone) but there are other commercial products (and iPhone app) that use the same code.

Hugin is also free and has pretty advanced options if you want to go wild.  I used it to stitch a monster 8ft photo for a quarry sign - it took about 2 hours to render but was awesome 8)

I use CS3 too.  So quick.  Here's a photo from the "Commedagh for the Red Arrows" meet.  It is a combination of 6 individual pictures to create the panoramic view of Newcastle with one of the Red Arrows coming through the Donard/Commedagh Saddle.  All pics where taken on the day but I openly admit they are stitched together.  Just want to show you an example of what can be done in less than 2 minutes:

Nice work Dowser.  I use the photo stitch tool in Photoshop as well, it seems to do the job well.  Mind you, I've only ever taken a couple of pano's and keep meaning to do more as I really like them.  I'm a big fan of Colin Prior's photography and the Scottish landscape panoramas he shoots are awesome.  Only problem with pano's is that looking at them on a monitor doesnt really do them justice... they need to be printed out B I G :)

This one was taken during a snowy spell at the start of last year on Cavehill:

Here is one I shot at a place called Doagh Island in Donegal, close to the Doagh Famine Village:

Two awesome shots Suspect  ;)  I was at that exact location at Doagh Island last year but I hadn't even considered panoramic photos at that stage.  I will be doing a lot more from now on.  Would like to get a few professionally printed and mounted to hang in the house.
