FTP and the .......
« on: November 10, 2010 »

...forum  ;)

What is a FTP link when you posting a message on the board?  I've only used 'Insert Hyperlink' so far, but how do you enter a click-able link but it is called something else and it looks like this?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's basically a way to move files to and from website hosting space.

how do you enter a click-able link but it is called something else and it looks like this?

To make clickable links first you need to make sure you aren't using the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the page if you have it enabled.  Instead click "Reply" to the appropriate post so you are presented with the text box and all the options such as Bold, Italic, Underline etc.  Then follow these steps:

  • Type the text you want for make clickable.  For instance, in your example you would type "like this".
  • Once you've typed the words you want to make clickable highlight them by clicking and dragging with the left mouse button.
  • Now click the "Insert Hyperlink" button which is the little world icon just below the "Underline" button.  This will "wrap" your text in "URL" tags.
  • URL tags tell your internet browser where to go, but so far all we have is "like this" with no actual address linked to it (click and try).  We now need to tell the URL tag where it needs to go by adding an "=" sign after the opening URL tag, followed by the web address.  For example "url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Url]".
  • So, your finished clickable text should now look something like: [ url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Url]like this[ /url].  Note that there shouldnt be spaces between the opening square bracket and the closing square bracket, I just did this so you could see it.
  • Now you can click "Preview" to check your link has worked, or just click the "Post" button and it will look like this.
