Title: Marshalling the Iplod 17/18 June 2011
Post by: admin on February 10, 2011
Following last years success Action Medical Research have invited us to marshall their Iplod event on June 17/18th this year.
http://www.action.org.uk/plod_mourne_mountains (http://www.action.org.uk/plod_mourne_mountains)

Assuming things take the same form as 2010 we will provide 4 teams who will marshall an overnight race on the Friday. The runners start at Tollymore and have to pass through checkpoints at Hares Gap, The Castles, Donard Summit and Bog of Donard. In a nutshell all we need to do is have a gaggle of people at each checkpoint who will check the teams as they pass by. A minibus will drop us at start points with plenty of time to get to our checkpoints by the time the race starts at 11pm. As the last team passes each checkpoint the marshalls can get some sleep with the last team passing the last point by 6am. Then we hike back down to Bloody Bridge car park for 9am where the bus will take us to a BBQ breakfast at Silent Valley. This will be the end of our main element of participation but there is plenty to do through the day if people want to stay and help.

We need a minimum of 8 people but can take as many as want to join in. You need to be fit and equipped enough for a night on the hill in which you will likely not get much sleep.

This is the thread from last year, we had a right laugh plus got to do something for charity:
http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=387

Update, 12th June 2011
Okay everyone, final details. Firstly, we had some dropouts and had to cancel the Trassey Pens checkpoint.

Spots and people:
Hares Gap : Surfnscenic, Lynda, Matthewrblack, Simon
Comedagh/Donard Style : Fergy, Scribble, Chuck, Big E
Donard Summit: 666_Pack, MikeD
Donard Bog : Redleader, BillyBackpack, Lou, Tim

The arrangements as I understand them are as follows:
* Be at the Burrendale by 7pm Friday (or earlier, it's very important we're not late)
* We'll be bussed to the Trassey/Bloody Bridge car parks
* Hike to checkpoints by 10pm
* Do the event
* Be back at Bloody Bridge car park early Saturday morning to be bussed to Silent Valley for breakfast
* We'll be dropped back at the Burrendale again

Things to remember:
* You'll need to bring a watch of some sort to record timings
* If you don't have basic kit, speak to other people in your team and see who you can share with. Please don't leave this until the night, you wont be allowed into the hills unless you have access to basic kit (sleeping bag, tent/bivvy/bothy bag/tarp, first aid kit, stove, warm clothes, waterproofs, map/compass). Also, obviously pack light.

Update, 15th June 2011
The weather doesn't look great. Wet and a shade windy. Pack warm and bring full wet gear

No need for official first aid. Only thing we'd like is for people to have been out with us at least once before the event.

Just whatever kit you need for a night in the hills. You can bring whatever gear you feel suitable but it must contain the basics for safety and you'd need to be able to carry it the length of the Brandy Pad (although that depends on where you are marshalling on the route).

Feel free to PM me with any questions, or post here.

Hi, I had previously said I was interested in doing this too.  Unfortunately I've a bit too much on with doing the 4 peaks the weekend before the Iplod and being out for a practice walk with all the 4 peak's team the weekend they are doing the training.

As Spartan used in another topic:-

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Just had it confirmed that i'll be camping in Mournes with the Scouts on iplod weekend so i'll not be able to make it (can't do the 21st May either due to another Mourne event) , but i should be near Meelmore on Fri night so might possibly pop up for a visit if anyone gets stationed there.

Hey guys I'm new on here but volunteering overnight in the Mournes sounds like great craic for a good cause!  If ye have room for a little one I'm definately up for it..... although I don't want to be stuck with any 'resident weirdos' ;D

Oh, and if there's any lifts going to the safety training on the 21st I'd welcome a boot to squeeze into!

Evening all, Saturday is fast approaching and I was wondering what the deal is with lifts. I have to go to work first to see a cricket team but after that, I am free all day. If we need to be there for 10:30, I would need to be leaving 45mins to get to Newcastle. I am presuming the usual suspects will be jumping in the car with me.

If this is the case, text me or post and confirm.

Good to meet Chuck, Matthew, George and Lynda at the meeting in the Burrendale today. I have to say, I'm uber chuffed with the free brights and gizmos they were handing out ... worth attending just for those :)

Anyhoo, I think Matthew is going to give everyone else an update on marshalling stations and pairing people up so that each team has at least one person on it who has marshalled before.

I'm happy with any of the stations except the Trassey Track sheep pens. I should be getting a torch/headstrap/camping-shade combo for review and would be bringing it along to use for the event. Hare's Gap would give me the chance to see how it fares in a night walk. I'd also be interested to see what other people think of it.

At most I'll be bringing a tarp for shelter if it turns wet and there is a need to have somewhere relatively dry to make a cup of tea.

Afternoon all, just back from the planning meeting and it was good to put two more names to faces.

The bulk of the important information will follow.

•   Be at Burrrendale hotel for 6-7 on the Friday night.
•   Minibus leaves for Bloody Bridge at 7:30 sharp
•   Teams (us) to be in place in the hills no later than 10:00
•   In the morning teams sweep through collecting glow sticks and litter
•   A greater emphasis on looking after people not medically but giving advice if unwell looking out for signs of fatigue or hypothermia. offering a drink to the cold
•   Tollymore is the main venue this year, a change from Silent Valley
•   Teams of four at the main check points.
•   Detailed check in information I am sure this will be distributed on the day of the event, if not we can disseminate the information.

 Kit list.
We are all sensible enough when it comes to this but I will just say that people should check some of the kit lists floating around.
One from Jonno
http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=885.0 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=885.0)
Mine
http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1728.0 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1728.0)
Despite the quite extensive list, things worthy of note would be that people should bring:
•   a tent
•   OSNI 1:25000 map
•   Bivvy bag and 5 foil blankets ( I presume they will be given out)
•   Bothy bag if people have them
•   Stove, milk, tea, coffee. Don't ask me where the water is coming from
•   Personal food stuffs
•   Mobile phone.
On the day we will be provided with
•   high vis vest
•   whistle
•   clicker for checking teams in
•   clipboard
•   marker
•   Snacks for teams.
People at the meeting today are required to bring the paperwork with them as it contains some important information. I will photocopy this and give it out to anyone wanting it on the Friday.

That should be the bulk of the information out of the way now.
All that is left to do is to sort out teams. In total five teams are required in the following order

1.   Trassey track sheep pen
2.   Hares Gap
3.   stile on the wall at the castles
4.   Donard king of the hill ( three people required)
5.   Bog of Donard.

I will post five different team numbers, just copy and paste your name into the thread and it will naturally fill up

Any further organising is probably best undertaken in the individual groups.

Matthew

Good to meet you folks...sorry it was a bit quick, should have stuck about for a chat...

Just a couple of things that I took away on top of what Matthew is saying (folks please let me know if I've picked any of this up wrong):

- They really seem to have gone into organisation overdrive, which is good if it turns nasty up there. There's a lot of radioing/texting every time a team checks in or does a King of the Hill.
- If anyone can make it down early on the Friday they could do with some help setting up tents and stuff
- They are also looking for and extra two people to man a check point between noon and late afternoon on the Saturday.
- We meet to register at the Burrendale between 6pm-7pm...but then we need to get over to Tollymore Lower Forest Car Park for 7.30pm because that's were the Minibus is picking us up to take us to the drop point.
- that leads to that they are telling us there is only one drop off point: Bloody Bridge River Car Park, so whoever is in Team 1 (Trassey Track) and Team 2 (Hares Gap), will have to walk the entire length of the Brandy Pad on the Friday night and Saturday morning....kinda wishing I'd stuck around to point out how much of a slog that would be rather than being dropped at the bottom of the Trassey track. Perhaps we can negotiate that with them.
- They are still interested if we can man Donard Summit right through to 6pm on the Saturday for Comms relay.

I'll get the info pack scanned and uploaded on Monday.

Hi guys, cheers for gathering the info. Don't worry too much about organising all the teams, we'll divide them all up so that there is a good amount of experience per team with no-one walking further than they want. I'll speak to the organisers and check out the bus situation, it seems quite an ask to drop everyone at Bloody Bridge.

Couple of other thing I just remembered from the briefing:
- They are going to laying a trail of glow sticks along the route starting at Trassey Track -> Bandy Pad -> Bloody Bridge
- They are going to be attaching high powered lights to the styles at the castles and Bog of Donard to make sure people see them

Hi Guys,

I have most of the final information and I will PM everyone today/tomorrow with details and some questions.

Just to note, there will be a drop off to the Trassey and Bloody Bridge on Friday night but only one pick up on Saturday morning from Bloody Bridge (as far as I can tell the bus drivers are also sweeping the route from Trassey across). This means that the groups at the Trassey side of the route will need to walk across the Brandy Pad to Bloody Bridge car park as the last teams pass through.

More info to follow by PM soon.

Also, if anyone else is still interested in marshalling this event there is still time to put your name down. PM me for more info.

Hello and welcome! I was hoping to make it down early on the Friday to help with set up in Tollymore, but work commitments means that I can't. I might be down late afternoon if you still need a hand.

(PS - I was sat immediately to your left at the training)

Most people who are helping with all the different aspects of set up aren't able to make it down til late afternoon, so if you're game for coming down and helping to set up in Tollymore we will be very glad of the extra pair of hands!

Since you will be participating in the night phase...if you prefer to take your time down and relax a bit after work, as you will be up all night long, don't worry I won't take offence  ;D

Everyone should now have a PM with info and questions. If you could all reply as soon as possible it would be appreciated.

Incase anyone doesn't read between the lines and detect the hint, we need peeps to marshall at the Trassey Pens/Hares gap who are willing to walk the whole pad to Bloody Bridge in the early hours after the event finishes to sweep the route and collect stuff. If you could bear that in mind while answering the "where do you want to marshall" question  ::) Obviously, it's quite an ask so don't volunteer unless you're defo game...

I'm not sure how mandatory meeting in the burrendale before hand is... as it would suit me to get down to Newcastle around 8ish ..... I was considering just driving down and parking at BB, then in the morning, shooting off home, forgoing the free breakfast.....

But, I'd need someone to pick up my goody bag (hopefully)  :)
Title: Re: Marshalling the Iplod 17/18 June 2011
Post by: admin on June 15, 2011
As far as I'm aware it's important that people officially check in and check back out again for safety reasons I'm afraid. Plus we need to be at the Burrendale to fill out some paperwork and get final instructions on evac routes etc.

We need to be at the Burrendale for 7pm. It's important to not be late as they need to offload us and free up the minibuses again.

Also, I got an official 'no drinking' instruction so no pre-hike carbs at the Burrendale I'm afraid!

Good luck Shamara.

Do we know if we're going to get a feed at the Burrendale? Last year there was a big old pot of stew to throw down us at the exit briefing took place, but I'm seeing not mention of it this year.

No stew this year I'm afraid. No word as to why, probably wanting to get us in and out quickly.

Chuck, could you bring your two radios and lend one to one of the other checkpoints? That way we would have enough for one at each checkpoint.

Technically we have enough but there's no upper limit on numbers if you wanted to help (well as many as we can squeeze in a couple of minibuses!)

is no-one at the start of the trassey track? i will be in the area and could have popped up for a cuppa, don't think i'll have time to reach the hares gap, have to get back and make hot chocolate and read ghost stories to the little scouts  ;D

Just arrived in Tollymore and set up caravan where wife will stay tonight with friends. It's wild weather, heavy rain and strong winds.  I wish I'd brought my wet suit!

See you guys all have a good time...and be safe up there high tonight.

Forecast here is showing things getting better  with wind dropping and rain clearing a touch - but more rain tomorrow.

Just finished my tea...and think I might go find a Jamesons to start the weekend with   ::)

It went really well. Weather was actually pretty awesome. Some light rain over night but other than that, low winds and sunshine on the walk back down.

The event went really well. No real problems, the marshalling went without a hitch. As usual, it's hard staying up all night.

Well done everyone, job well done!

Yup, was a good one, glad we all to have a good time (or put on a brave face at least).

The organisation was a _little_ less 'seat of your pants' compared to last year. Comms guys were much more prepared (even though their radios failed yet again.....and our comms guy got vertigo going up the side of Donard with me and had to stop and sit down a load of times  ???)

My thanks to Fergy and Big E for doing all the hard marshalling paperwork on our checkpoint work while I sat by the fire for most time and Scribble cooked steak and onions (hmm..that smell: should be a law against it  ;D)

Hi Liam, shame we didn't see you... And we didn't get the first teams through hares gap till about 2.40 so I'd imagine ylou were snoring away at that point!!

Next year I reckon we make a point of meeting up either before or after... there were too many people I didn't get to meet it was so rushed!!

It was good to see the Hares Gap Crew as i passed through. Come 11:45 the rain and a really bad bog of a campsite (long story) I wished I had just stayed with them LoL.

Where did you camp?
