Shaws Bridge to Malone Bridge
« on: July 29, 2009 »

Just back from a wee trip from Shaws Bridge up stream to the bridge at the Malone road. Got to the first weir and thought we would be smart and take the old canal channel to the left (and boy it was hard work!). We ended up portaging to the bridge at malone, all because a walker said it was only 15 minutes walk. Got to the top weir and the man with the experiance (you know who you are) decided to walk his new boat round the wier but then said no problem you can do it and off I went! It was bloody brilliant I dropped about 5/6 ft and felt very confident. We paddled on down the river and over the next weir to the next biggy but decided to port round it, back to the place we got out at first. Really enjoyed today and recommend it to anyone, 6 miles done and looking forward to the next trip.

With regards to the little adventure, you failed to mention the paddling through gloop, pulling kayaks through thorns and nettles and to make a point about the failure to tackle the weir - just remember the depth of water was in question and I didn't fancy scoring the underside of my nice new boat!!!
All in all, a well spent afternoon, plenty of adventure and great craic.
Anybody fancy joining us on the next expedition?

I'm trying to picture where you are. Surely from Shaws Bridge upstream goes to Edenderry/Eel Weir?

Were you in kayaks or open canoes?

Have been trying to check out where exactly we paddled to and by my reckoning we roughly got as far as Drumbeg if you google map you will see where upper malone road crosses the river and if you follow the bends downstream to the weir thats the point where we turned for the return leg (hope this helps).
