Canoeing to Salt Island in Strangford
« on: May 20, 2009 »

I'm keen to paddle to Salt Island. It's owned by the National Trust, has a bothy on and you can camp there. Apparently it's not a hard paddle. Has anyone been and can add any advise?

yeah, make sure you have a key to the bothy if your planing to stay in it . i think its well booked up in advance as i paddled down from killinchy with a mate back in july.when we got there it was all locked up.we were prepared to camp anyway so it wasnt a problem.

its an easy paddle on a kayak from killyleigh but might be fun in an open canoe if theres any wind.

also bear in mind that the launch site at the bothy dries up for a couple of hours at low tide. we were stranded for at least two hours waiting for some water to appear as we wernt going to drag our fully loaded yaks across the island.

I've been now a few times. Had an awesome time both trips, both camping, one with access to the bothy just in case!
Can't recommend it highly enough as a good remote getaway that isn't too far to travel.
