Two held over forest stabbing
« on: August 03, 2009 »

Quote
A man and a woman are being questioned by police after a shocking knife attack at a Co Down beauty spot popular with families and holiday-makers.

A male victim in his forties was treated for stab wounds after he was injured at Tollymore Forest Park near Bryansford, Co Down, late on Saturday.

His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. He is thought to have been stabbed with a knife. The attack was reported to police around 11.30pm.

A man in his thirties and a woman were arrested on Saturday night and were last night still held in police custody.

Ulster Unionist councillor Desmond Patterson condemned the stabbing.

“It seems that Tollymore Forest Park has become a bit rowdy over the last few seasons, and this is what it has led to,” Mr Patterson said.

SDLP councillor Carmel O’Boyle said the forest park was well-known as a popular destination for families. “We have a lot of caravanners there this season as we have every summer — though there may be even more this year as more people choose to holiday at home than go abroad,” she said.

“It has always been a place for families and so on, so it is alarming that someone appears to have resorted to using a knife to settle an issue.

“It is the most beautiful spot and always popular with families, so we want it to stay this way. But the stabbing would seem typical of the kind of knife culture that is everywhere today.”

One woman who runs a business in nearby Bryansford said people in the area were shocked by the stabbing.

The Co Down attack follows the stabbing of a man in Hamiltonsbawn, Co Armagh on Tuesday.

A 42-year-old man suffered puncture wounds to his head in the attack in a house in Main Street in the village. A man in his thirties was arrested.

This is pretty poor all round. Sounds like the outcome of more and more people seeing camping as a useful way to get the lads together for a drinking session.

I try and avoid organised campsites anyway because of the no fires rule. I prefer somewhere a little more remote when possible. Plus nothing ruins my calm more than having to listen to dance music from 40 meters :D

I would avoid campsites like the plague, unless I was very stinky and needed a shower et al. First/last time I camped in Tollymore I remember screaming kids during the late evening and happy hardcore during the night (1-3am.) Unwanted music is no-ones cup of tea, no matter what genre it is.

Music wise I will listen to pretty much everything  8)
