As well as the Red Arrows, last year’s event included fly-pasts and aerial displays from the Irish Air Corps and Irish Coast Guard.

Thousands of people flocked to Newcastle, in addition to shores around Dundrum Bay to watch last year’s display, which saw the pilots performing breathtaking gravity-defying manoeuvres over the sea and the Mournes.

This week Sharon O’Connor, Down District Council’s director of cultural and economic development, confirmed that the stunt team will be making a welcome return.

“Following the unparalleled success of the Harry Ferguson Festival of Flight in August 2010, which saw over 150,000 visitors flock to the seaside resort to enjoy a week-long festival, Down District Council can confirm that the Red Arrows will be returning to Newcastle on Saturday 6 August to form part of the summer festival,” she said.

Ms O’Connor said further details of the events will be released in coming weeks and it is hoped “that once again this spectacular event will capture the imagination of the residents of Down District and attract the visitors from both home and abroad.”

Emphasising that plans are currently under wraps, the Council official added that this summer’s festival will “showcase” Newcastle as a gateway to the Mournes.

She said the town “will provide a dramatic landscape” for a variety of events for all the family, adding that it will have “great social and economic benefits” for the Down District region.

good stuff, I missed this last year. I want to get a shot like Dowser got last year.

I'm pretty sure Dowser photoshopped two of my photos together to create his master shot :)

Last year was a pretty spectacular weekend, we'd a right laugh.

So where do you reckon the best spot to watch them is?

I was at the quarry on Donard last time, great view but didn't quite get the ful impact of the sound, I imagine it would have been worse on Commedagh.

I never really thought about the sound but the view from Commedagh was brilliant. Especially good when they did a fly through between Commedagh/Donard. Also, it wasn't too packed.

As i work at an airport i'm used to the sound so i really notice the lack of it when the planes are too far away.

Also was at the end of the runway when concorde flew into Aldergrove, that was awesome  :)

Definitely heard the sound when they flew over the saddle between Commedagh and Donard :)  Couldn't hear them much when they were doing the display over the beach mind, but it didn't ruin the display.  Binoculars were handy though!
