Along Trassey Track to Slieve Corragh
« on: August 23, 2012 »

A couple of weeks ago when the weather was settled I took a dawn dander along Trassey, through Hares' Gap and on up to Corragh.

I finally got around to processing a few pics. Got a couple of keepers, which was an unexpected bonus. But I needed a tripod to keep it all level. Extra weight!

If you've never been to this area there's a car park on the Trassey Road, close to the Trassey Track gate and stile which are up the road 50 yards. Some folk use Meelmore Lodge as a base:

This is an easy enough walk, nothing serious. There are just a few steep sections along the way to bring the sweat on, but you can take it slow. I was back at the car around 11.30am and there was only one space left.

I put a short video on YouTube: http://youtu.be/zBfsQ3S8Www

What are you using to record Shand, and more importantly how are you managing to get such good audio without the wind blowing down the mic?

Loved the photos and the video.. Very professional and you could really feel the remoteness of the Mournes, although shame on you for not hurting midgies when making it lol..

Mine too, I always like that sort of picture. They always make me think of horror movies lol

You must have watched this one when you were younger, classic!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Really appreciate it.

 :D

Oisín, I use the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS. Not a bad wee camera for outdoor HD video. It has a powerful zoom lens that's handy in the mountains. Those campers were a long way off. Wind noise is usually bad but I was lucky that it was quite calm that day. Secondhand prices aren't too bad.

Kayakgirl, the midges were hungry! Like me they like an early start. But I didn't expect them to be so bad. They really got stuck in when I was setting up the cameras. I had over 40 bites.

Can anyone here recommend anything that really works? Maybe a lightweight flame-thrower...

 ;D

Yup the skin so soft stuff works, ive found i need to apply it occasionally for it to remain effective.

I don't think every morning before work qualifies as occasionally. lol

Avon skin so soft worked for me for midgies and Mosquitos.  I get terrible bites when I am in Catalunya but this year after using Avon I only got a few and that was days when I think I forgot to use it.

Back to the photos and video.  Loving both.  The video worked really well and was well edited.  The photo with the mist in the valley was class.  Thanks for sharing.

FlapJack, that’s one downhill solution for sure!

Thanks for the advice on Avon. Will try it next time around. Bites made me uglier than usual.

Mickey, thanks for the encouraging words. Need that. I’ve had a look at some of your own videos – impressive stuff. The slow mo sequences are very effective. I’ve seen bike videos that suffer a lot from vibration but yours look well. The boom mount stuff is excellent. Have a look folks.
