« on: April 08, 2010 »

hi all,

i'm trying to plan a little trip for me and the bro

i was wondering what the camping spots are like on top of slieve bearnagh? is there anywhere to camp on north side of the wall, if the wind is coming from the south?

what about hares gap? is there flat grassy spots there?

i cant really remember!

oh and what about the hares gap end of ben crom??

cheers

We camped up there before:

We pitched by the wall between the 2 summits but depending on the weather you could probably get up by the tors for shelter.

cheers J, I'm thinking of heading up there tonight but its all going to be very last minute if i do, cause of work!! nightmare, its hard to plan anything!

Whats the ground like for pitching a tent? it looks pretty grassy and flat from the photo's?

is there flat grass areas by the tors ( north or summit?) suitable for tents?

I've been up there once but it was my first peak and wasnt thinking of camping back then so i wasnt really looking for spots!!

The spot we were on was plenty flat - you could have a rave :)
Only issue would be if the wind was in the wrong direction. Can.t remember if there was room on the other side of the wall or not but unless the weather was really bad I daresay you'd get pitched somewhere.

see the wind tonight is from the south so you'd have no shelter there! on met check for the mournes its giving around 22mph on the peak... so not sure now!

Any other suggestions anywhere around that area?

What sort of tents are you taking? It was windy overnight when we were up and it was fine - bit flappy though :D

When I was on Bearnagh I was in a Hike Lite Pro. Like I say, flappy but it didn't blow away :D Not sure about Commedagh as I've never really paid that much attention when I've been on it but it does seem both more exposed and is higher than Bearnagh.

You'll be fine mate. 22mph is a wee breeze ;) If you give these things to much thought you'll never do it just get stuck in.
