NI-Wild Challenges - Suggestions
« on: February 02, 2010 »

I think we should have an ongoing plan for a set of achievement type outdoors activities that we can all do in a list that we can cross off as done. I'm not talking cub scout badges here or anything too taxing (necessarily) but more just having a plan of things you would like to get done and a sense of acomplishment as you do them. We could have several across numerous disciplines and as people do one they cross it off a list in a thread. We could also all chip in for a prize for the first to finish - just something nominal.

I suppose I'm not exactly explaining this very well so here's my example which might be more instructive:

Bivvy / camp on the top of all the Mournes seven sevens before the year is out. So we get a thread and anyone who wants to participate can join in and every time someone does one, they update their entry in the thread.

I haven't worked out the best way to organise this yet but it shouldn't be too hard.

It seems like this would be an awesome way to both easily organise trips that people would be interested in doing as well as giving an easy way to motivate yourself and other people.

Post challenge suggestions beneath along with any other thoughts. If enough people are interested, we'll kick it off. Remember, it doesn't need to be just hiking or camping. Can be anything outdoors from Abseiling to Zorbing.

I'd like to climb at least one pitch on every crag in the mournes. (this one is stupid but i'd like to bivy tied in on a ledge and cook my dinner with my stove hanging! Pretend I'm on the eiger or something!)

I'd like to spend a night in the mournes with no/next to no kit just to see what its like.

I'd like to walk the mourne wall and do the 7 7's

I'd like to get down to magilly cuddies reek (spelling!?) and camp there.

I'd like to walk the WHW

Good suggestions, really like the idea of spending a night in the Mournes with next to no kit!

Just to add, I was looking for lists of similar stuff that could be ticked off by groups in several trips rather than individual ideas.

Can be anything outdoors from Abseiling to Zorbing.

Haha...I imagined Zorbing to be some sort of outer body/outer space experience before I googled it there!!  Although I can imagine that's what it might feel like after rolling around!  I like the sound of the jungle...they have hot tubs too!

These are things I would like to do in the mournes soon:
I would like to walk the Binian Tunnel.
Wake up to a sunrise bivying on top Ben Crom.
Walk lighter and camp longer.
Take my son up into the mountains for his first night's mountain camping.
Find the remaining geocaches I have yet to find.
I was not ready this winter, but next winter, if there is good snow, go up and make an igloo or ice cave (If I got the right spot, I could carry the skis in and ski out)
And other things as they are dreamt of...
