Title: Easter Camp in the Mournes
Post by: andymcinroy on April 15, 2015
My son and I enjoyed an excellent easter Camp in the high Mournes and were awarded with some beautiful light for some photographs. On Monday we climbed Slieve Bernagh before camping at the head of Ben Crom Reservoir. On Tuesday we climbed Slieve Commedagh. Some of you may have seen the Ben Crom image on the BBC Weather forecast last week.

Thanks all.

Unfortunately I missed a once in a lifetime photo opportunity.

On the brandy pad a Queen Hornet landed on my son's head. It was enormous and the biggest stinging vespid I have ever seen in real life. I have seen quite a few Sawflies which are fearsome looking vespids but those are harmless. This hornet was at least 2-3 times the size of a common wasp with brown and yellow stripes. I believe the early Spring is the time they are establishing their new colonies. I have since learned that they are relatively docile but in the heat of the moment I flicked it away before he reaslised what was on him.

I wish that I had waited a couple more seconds to get the picture.
