I'm in unless my flights are delayed. Hopefully I have some kit which does not smell of jungle.

Think I'll try this as an ultralight weekend as a tester.

Who wants to post a gear list.

Has anyone been on Chimney Rock summit - it's one of the ones I've yet to do. What's the best route onto it and is there room at the top for a handful to camp?

I've attached a map of the summit area.

From memory there is loads of room....'cos there aint nothing there :) Could be very exposed..

If we need a bit of shelter we may want to be heading for the rocky outcrop SE of the summit. Think it's pictured here:

If you're coming from the Brandy Pad, just follow it to the Bog of Donard then cross the stile and pick your way through the bogs to the summit.

I'm trying to get hold of the folks in the Bloody Bridge Campsite, would be a quicker route to dump the car there and go up Bloody Bridge River...or up over Slievenagarragh towards the summit.

Found this

by janerobbie  26 Jan 2005 Ah, Bleck Cra, like many a man you’ve been taken in by a good looking girl. Look behind that pretty little face and you’ll find a cold hearted woman with a dark and dangerous past. During WW2 an American B-26 decided to take a closer look at this little stunner. She clipped his wings and sent him hurtling in smithereens down her curvaceous sides. If you want to see the result of this woman’s wrath, cross the stile between Rocky and Chimney Rock, turn left towards the Bloody Bridge River and at the first small quarry turn right to cross Spence’s River and head for the summit. Keep the quarry at your back and from the river to the summit, and especially once you cross the quarry track, you’ll find the debris – an engine, lots of leads and aluminum (no, not a spelling mistake – this is an American plane) and other things I didn’t recognise because I’ve never worked in an aircraft factory. There used to be a plaque, on the rock beside the engine, but it’s gone now – a victim of thieves, just like the Northern Bank.

Chuck
I checked the red box on your map it's on the wrong side of the path. The area I was refering to GRID362255 is to the left of the path (Rocky Mt side) on the 560m contour line.
Hope this helps, thought I'd let you know so you wouldn't be searching in the wrong place.

AHh...thanks jimi r, so we're talking J 363 255, ( OS Ireland 100m?). If so that would put it here? Is that a bit closer?

Chuck
That's about right, sorry should have specified OS Ireland. A plaque with the names of the crew was recently attached to a rock near the summit.

Think I'll try this as an ultralight weekend as a tester.

Who wants to post a gear list.

Seeing me and Kat are coming along I will probably bring the tent.  We are short a bivvi bag any way, but split between two people there isnt a huge difference between a tent and 2x bivvi bag's, tarp and walking poles.  Will probably bring the JetBoil for grub.

Mind you I'm looking at 6 Pack's kit list and feeling a bit jealous... Given that its only one night, perhaps ditching the tarp and just sleeping in the bivvi under the stars is the way forward.  And I could probably survive without hot food as well at a push ;)

I have a spare trekmates bivvi bag if you want to borrow it? There might also be an issue bag if andy doesn't need it.
