Carrying Meths
« on: February 08, 2013 »

I'm going to attempt to make a penny stove tonight and was just wondering, how safe is it to carry methylated spirits around in your rucksack? Are there any recommendations on what I should carry it in - a bottle I imagine  :P but any particular sort?

I carry mine in a sigg aluminium bottle, but any sturdy bottle with a tight fitting lid would do!

I can second the Sigg bottle. An invention that revolutionized the outdoor world.

Don't use anything plastic, if you can't get a Sigg bottle, maybe a metal army surplus one?

A small Nalgene bottle is the business. Chemical companies sell resistant bottles too. I use either, basically whatever comes to hand first.

Something like these;

In my view a Sigg bottle is just way to expensive to carry fuel in, come to think about it they are just overpriced form the word go.

I (when I CBA to use meths) take mine in the 100ml plastic bottles it comes in. I use the industrial meths which isn't coloured or flavoured ;) and is 99% and they are great as they fit into various little spaces and don't leak.

I use the bottle the meths comes in and have never had an accident yet even though the plastic does seem a bit thin, but i've been meaning to get one of the Trangia Fuel Bottles with safety valve, the 500ml version looks ideal:

I carry the 300ml Trangia bottle, it is a nice wee size of a bottle.  I've read elsewhere that 500mls should last several  days, it's all relative to how much you use of course.

Coke bottles and the like are very strong. Not sure about the sealing if it was tipped, but will work. If it's just on overnighter/day trip a smaller 100ml bottle will do fine.
Main thing is to make sure whatever container you use is labelled with the contents and "Flammable".

I'm now thinking a 500ml Trangia bottle is probably overkill for my needs and the 300ml is looking more tempting, i usually only take 250ml of meths on a camp and return with a fair bit and the bottle looks like it's not going to take up much space in the ruck.
