Title: Bloody Bridge 2nd Jul 11
Post by: RedLeader on June 25, 2011
Last Minute Info

Some last minute info from flipmeb who is at the campsite and has spoken to Frank.  For those that were there at Easter we are in the same field - after coming through the gate off the main road go up the hill and turn right, through another gate which takes you into the campsite.  We are using the first field on your right.  There is a padlock on the gate, but it isn't locked.  When you come through the gate please close it after you so we can have the area to ourselves.  Frank has also asked we stayed off the longer grass.

********************

We"re going to have a family night at Franks up at Bloody Bridge next Sat night. A nice comfy one round the fire. Not sure what the plan is but obviously anyone can come by whatever route they want.

Reply with thoughts / suggestions.

Might try to make it along too.  Trying to convince the rest of the family, if I convince them I'm sure they'll be weather-dependent.

I hope you have a good time mate, you deserve to get out and see the countryside, after all those those years for being banged up for murder.

Have you still got my chainsaw by the way?

@Rumblebum, that could be addressed to any of us.. who are you talking to?
Title: Re: Bloody Bridge 2nd Jul 11

I can't quite picture where this is. Do you want to contact Frank and tell him we're coming with a dozen or so people and ask him to hold the spot? He should remember NI-Wild okay, I had a good chat with him the last time.

Last time we went out we repeated the Brandypad and bbq http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1911.0 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1911.0) and we took the smaller field into the right as you go up to the toilet block. Obviously early days but if there would be enough of us interested it might be worth giving frank a ring and seeing if he would keep an area like that for us.

We'll get a total and book altogether. That's usually the easiest way.

So is this on?

Do I need to book anything?  :)

Prolly see some of you guys about when we get down.

Post by: RedLeader on June 28, 2011
Are you planning to walk all the way to Bloody Bridge from Carrick Little? That was one of my original thoughts but I don't think I'll be able to get down early enough. What ages are the kids? There are already two 12 year olds going.

We were up at end of May and when I phoned him a couple of days before I used NI-Wild Brandy and BBQ trip as a reference and he remembered us.

Me, Citiz3nsane, binlandenisdead +1 and kids are going to do a walk. We are thinking of upto blue lough from carrick little and see what happens from there. We will be down earlyish to get the hotel erected  ;D ;D

Will give frank a ring today no probs.
Title: Re: Bloody Bridge 2nd Jul 11
Post by: RedLeader on June 28, 2011
Sounds good. As long as he knows how many we think are coming it shouldn't be a prob. Plus you'll be down earlier than us so you can just pick a spot. Just make sure Frank knows where you are so we can be sure and pitch at the same place if you're all off hiking.

Ok just of the phone with frank.

Should be no problem with us all coming. As to getting somewhere held it depends how many show up on friday. I suppose its the start of the holidays

We will be down for 10:00 - 10:30 so unless anyone is down before we will have a look and try to pitch somewhere we all can get into.

He asked me to pop him an email so I will do this now.

Where would you find a red, white and blue flag at this time of the year  ::) ;D

Cerbera, you are more than welcome to join us on our walk. I'm assuming it will be a gentle stroll as we will have two young'uns with us.

Im thinking a loop incorporating carrick little carpark, blue lough, percy bysshe and Binnian looks good and will give the kids a bit of a workout.

Mine started this morning about wanting her own pack for her jacket and water, sounds good to me  ;)

That sounds good; is it this one? http://www.walkni.com/Walk.aspx?ID=64

It'll be me and my 12yo son so gentle stroll works for me :)

Right, I'm in.  With only one child in-tow.

Are you guys just taking your chance and turning up, no booking beforehand?

I'm probably going to set the tent up around mid morning then go for a walk around Rocky Mountain and Chimney Rock and anything else interesting around that way.  Then go pick up my son late afternoon and bring him down.

Any team kit needed?  Do they have any fire pits?  Can we do a fire wood collection nearby or is it a firelog effort?
Title: Re: Bloody Bridge 2nd Jul 11
Post by: RedLeader on June 29, 2011
Flipmeb has already called ahead to let them know we're coming. We'll maybe contact them again on Friday as it seems like a sizeable group. You can always call ahead yourself too just to be sure if you like, no harm in Frank knowing who we are ;)

There are fire circles you can use if you buy a bag of logs or a firelog from Frank. Think it was £4 for the first bag and £3 per bag after that. 2 bags did us the whole evening last time. Technically Frank insists that you buy fire stuff from him as it's a decent part of his income but I'd say as long as we buy a couple of bags from him, if someone had the odd log in the boot it would be fine. Wouldn't go advertising it though  ::)

If everyone just makes sure and tell Frank they're with NI-Wild he'll make sure we all pitch in the same spot and we'll all meet after everyone does whatever they have planned for the day. I think Flipmeb has a specific spot in mind and he's already requested it from Frank.

We could light the fire at the same time as the BBQs and have the BBQs at the edge. Usually we'd be cooking on the open fire so the BBQ question has never come up.

Just had a thought. We, the group Im going down with, had always planned a bit of baked potato on the fire action for dinner.

Now NI-Wild are going and BBQ's have been mentioned I remembered that we used the fire pit the last time for them then started the fire afterwards.

I think we as a whole either need to do the BBQ's differently or try to have 2 fire pits. I'm not trying to take over or tell ppl what to do, it sounds that way to me reading this. I'm simply preempting my grumpy man state when hungry and I know I wont want to wait till ppl are finished/ready to light the fire to get my spuds going.

I like the Potato in the fire idea...must remember to bring some as Baked Potatoes are an American tradition and would fit in nicely with our theme :) A quick power boil before chucking them into the fire quickens the cook time.

We're leaving Belfast at 2pm, should be there 3ish. (In NI-Wild time that means we're leaving at 220pm and should be there at 4ish after a McDonalds and some last minute shopping. It's the NI-Wild way, we're nothing if not consistent!)

I'll have one with me, you're welcome to take it for a spin.

If anyone coming down on Sat has an ALPKIT Pipedream 600 could they bring it down to let me have a wee look at it and maybe slip into it to for a second.

I want to make sure I would be comfortable in it before I order one.

Cheers

For anyone who wants to do wet bouldering on Saturday, please bring the following.
Old trainers/wellies
Wetsuit if you have it, if not layer up.
Buoyancy Aid -  if you don't have one don't worry.
Sense of fun!

I can get six helmets, if you need buoyancy aids let me know as I can borrow some from the centre I work in. Just let me know the sizes.
Xs, S, SM, M/L
Cheers

If you've got a sat nav or GPS here's the co-ord's N 54.173538 W 5.875157

Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=bloody+bridge&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl)

flipmeb gave me this advice 'as you come up the hill after the gate, there is a field to the right that has an old static caravan looking thing then after it is a right turn leading to another farm gate - you want to head through this and not head on up the road'

Think most are heading down mid afternoon.

Just to note, the lane you drive up is right after Bloody Bridge car park to the right of the Bloody Bridge trail and has no sign for the campsite. I know I missed it the first time.

We're up to 19 people, possibly 21. Everyone just needs to make sure and tell Frank (the owner) that they're with NI-Wild so he puts us all together.

I camped there last Saturday.  There are signs up the lane directing people to go right to the campsite and not to go straight ahead which is marked Private.

The lower field wasn't open then, no need as there was room without it.  If you're lucky you might be able to get the spot in the lower field where we camped after Brandy Pad walk.

Not sure until later this evening if I can make this. :-\

Some last minute info from flipmeb who is at the campsite and has spoken to Frank.  For those who were there at Easter we are in the same field - after coming through the gate off the main road go up the hill and turn right, through another gate which takes you into the campsite.  We are using the first field on your right.  There is a padlock on the gate, but it isn't locked.  When you come through the gate please close it after you so we can have the area to ourselves.  Frank has also asked we stayed off the longer grass.

I got home at about 3:45 after a well needed stop at McD's  ;D

The drive from Newcastle to Carryduff was just a blur  :o

Thanks for a good couple of days, it was a lot of fun.

Now for the nasty bit; clearing all the crap out of the car whilst burnt to a crisp  :-\ [note to self, bring sun cream and a hat  ::)]

Well its about 2.45am and the last StragglerS have just hit the sack and someone nearby is snoring !!!
Excellent night though  :)

I was 'answering the call of nature' at around the time and yes there was some serious snoring coming from somewhere. The donkey was getting some competition last night  :D So glad I brought earplugs ;D

Thanks for posting the pics Liam.  Just made me feel even worse for not being able to make it. :(  Looks like everyone had a good time.  I really enjoyed the Easter Brandy & BBQ stay there.  It's a good option between wild camping and the likes of Tollymore.  I'll be using there again as soon as I can.

George.

What a weekend guys, that was really mental. Great craic round the fire as usual but Sunday was a bit special. We wandered up the Bloody Bridge River to the pools for some swimming, then we made our way back to sea level down the river rather than the path. It was really epic, best fun I've had in ages although next time I'd like to do it sans hangover :) Lenny has pics, hopefully he'll get them online soon!

Thanks to Shamara, Kevin and Sonya for gear, help, expertise and some gentle encouragement to get from a height!!

Great to meet the new faces, hope we'll see you all again soon.

Top weekend everyone, was great meeting up with some well known faces and some new faces!  Bloody Bridge camp site was fantastic again and finally we got good enough weather to break out the shorts and t-shirts :)  Kudos to everyone who took part in the bouldering, it looked awesome and I can't wait to give it a go next time.  Oh, and well done to Lenny who did a smashing job with the badges.  They look great!

Wow what a weekend, the banter was mighty along with the vast quantities of drink consumed, I really was paying the price yesterday. So sore after the bouldering and burnt to a crisp but it really was great fun.

Until the next time!

Here's some of my piccies ;D

Wasn't sure if peeps are comfortable with their picture online so I've held back on the group shots but can PM them.

These pics our from our walk to Blue Lough and the search for the Percy Bysshe Cove Cave. We thought we found it and climbed up and in. Later we decided it wasn't it but after some further reading here I think we did ;D

All in all a very good couple of days apart from being burnt like idiot  ::)  My car was packed for every eventuality but not a drop of suncream or shorts for me  :-\  The worst part is we have been building a stock of suncream for our holiday Doh!!

Hopefully I'll be able to streamline after this trip and get ready for next one.

Hope to see you again on Bushcraft Sunday, hopefully the weather will stay good ;D

That is what is commonly referred to as Cove Cave, at Lower Cove on the map.  It featured on the BBC's Off the Beaten Track programme.  Percy Bysshe is a different cave altogether.

Did you climb up through the cave and out the other side?

I must add my agreement that it was a great camp.  Very relaxed and my kids had an absolute ball.  It was good to put same faces to names, and some names to faces!  Here's a couple of pics I took:

********Very important************

I removed a tick from behind Cameron's knee tonight.  Give yourself a check over and your kids also, especially if they were playing in the trees or rolling around in the long grass.

I'll not try to post information about ticks here since there is plenty of information on the net and I couldn't put it better than other sites have already done.  Safe to say it is important to remove ticks in the right way.

I had to remove a tick from myself last year; I think the incidence of them is rising.

Myself and my colleagues would each remove in excess of about 30 a year from ourselves.  If you're anywhere with livestock or deer or wild goats then check yourself afterwards.  They're everywhere!!  Though saying that, this year hasn't been too bad so far.  And yes I now know that that means I'm going to get lots next week!
